In today's fit for life... Researchers issue a warning about calcium supplements. A study out of New Zealand found the pills may increase the risk of a heart attack in older women. Researchers are concerned the supplements will speed up the hardening of blood vessels. The pills are often prescribed for post-menopausal women to help counter the loss of bone density.

And, the FDA issues an advisory about cough medicine for small children. It now says over-the-counter syrups could have serious and potentially life threatening side effects for babies and toddlers. The warning is for children under two. Last October, some major drug companies stopped selling cough syrups that target small kids.

Flu cases across the metro area are on the rise. The New York City health department says emergency room visits for influenza-related symptoms have increased a whopping 19% since November. There have also been outbreaks in nursing homes. The department is urging people to get flu shots to protect themselves and others from the epidemic.

And, can foods that benefit your body hurt your teeth? Some researchers say yes. Many popular diet sodas and sports drinks have a lot of acid, they say... And so do lots of fruits and veggies - that acid can erode the enamel protection of your teeth over time leaving them more sensitive, cracked and discolored.
