Cafeteria food is a separate issue that is controlled by the department of agriculture.

If you've ever had a really stuffy nose you probably noticed that those over the counter cold medicines don't do much to help you breathe. Now the FDA agrees. They say there's little proof that phenylephrine. The active ingredient in those medicines can open your nasal passages. The agency says most of the studies were done in the 60's and 70's. Were small and poorly designed. In fact, seven out of 14 studies of the drug did not show a significant improvement in nasal airflow at the currently used dosage.

Phenylephrine is now behind the counter in drug stores. You don't need a prescription, but you have to ask for it... Right?

A new study says people over 60 who exercise will live longer than their peers regardless of their weight.

Researchers from the university of South Carolina say overweight people who exercise have a lower risk of death than their out-of-shape counterpart even if they happen to be thin.

And more research suggests that antibiotics may NOT help fight sinus infections. A recent British study showed people with sinus infections improved within two weeks, even if they didn't take a standard antibiotic or nose spray. Amoxicillin is the most commonly prescribed antibiotic for sinus infections. But researchers say doctors may need to reconsider treatments.

In today's Fit For Life... More than 400 students at the university of southern Maine are being banned from their campus. They failed to meet the latest vaccination requirements for mumps.

The university ordered the students to get vaccinations following a mumps outbreak in the area. At least one university student was diagnosed with mumps. The school says any student who failed to get their shots will not be allowed in class.

And, air pollution from diesel traffic is emerging as a serious health hazard. Researchers say the fumes can worsen lung functions in people with asthma. According to a recent study, the fumes can impair lungs in just a few hours.

There's been a lot of discussion in the press these days about Mitt Romney’s faith. But did you know that Mormon’s have a lower risk of heart disease? Doctors used to think it was because they don't smoke, but new research finds that fasting occasionally, something Mormon’s apparently do, can lower your risk of heart disease. They say people who fasted once a month were about 40 percent less likely to develop heart disease compared to those who do not fast.

Doctors know that at least when it comes to gum disease obese people find it harder to fight infections.

Now a new study from Boston University says a weakened immune system may be to blame. In the report researchers exposed obese and normal weight mice to bacteria in their mouths, and found that the obese mice weren't able to fight off the infection as well as normal weight mice. And the obese mice had a compromised immune system response.

Do researchers know why this is happening?

Experts are concerned that more people are putting their health at risk by drinking too much alcohol and not even realizing. This was a British study but the numbers are likely to relate here in the US as well. The problem, they say is supersizing. Today’s alcoholic beverages often use larger glasses and that increases the amount of alcohol per drink. Women are especially at risk. With the new calculations the average woman is estimated to have drunk 45 percent more alcohol a week and men drank 26 percent more.

It's a kind of depression that grows during winter. Millions begin to feel depressed - they sleep more, eat more, and become sluggish and socially withdrawn. It's more common in women between the ages of 15 and 55, and it usually happens in places where the days get short in the winter and there are big changes in the amount of sunlight each day like here in the northeast. For some folks the holidays help, but for others who are without family this time of year, it can make things worse.

We don't really think about staying hydrated. For most of us when we get thirsty, we drink. Now a new study finds that older people are more likely to become dehydrated because their brains underestimate how much water the body needs to remain healthy. Researchers from Australia say that a part of the brain that regulates thirst switches off in older people before their body has been adequately hydrated. The study was small, it involved only 12 men aged 65 to 74, and 10 men aged 21 to 30. Both groups were given something salty to make them thirsty. Brain scans showed both groups had the same level of thirst but the older group drank less than half as much water before the thirst signal in the brain was switched off.

So what does this mean for older people?

CARROT CUPCAKES WITH CREAM CHEESE FROSTING
Carrot Cupcakes with Cream Cheese Frosting
Copyright, 2005, Ellie Krieger, All rights reserved
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Inactive Prep Time: 30 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Yield: 10 cupcakes
3/4 cup whole-wheat pastry flour
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 cup canola oil
3/4 cup firmly packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs
1/2 cup natural applesauce
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups finely shredded carrots (about 2 medium carrots)
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons finely chopped walnuts
4 ounces 1/3 fat cream cheese (recommended: Neufchatel)
3/4 cup confectioners' sugar, sifted
1/2 teaspoon finely grated lemon zest
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Line 12 muffin cups with paper liners.
Sift together the first 6 ingredients.
In a large bowl, whisk the oil, brown sugar and eggs until well combined.
Whisk in the applesauce, vanilla and carrots.
Add the dry ingredients and mix until combined. Stir in 1/4 cup of the chopped walnuts.
Divide the batter between the muffin cups.
Bake until a toothpick comes out clean, about 20 minutes.
Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
With an electric mixer, beat together the cream cheese, confectioners' sugar and lemon zest until smooth and creamy. Frost the cooled cupcakes. The cupcakes should be stored in the refrigerator.

1 pomegrante
5 oz. agave nectar
4 cinnamon sticks
1 1/2 liters of Sprite

cut apples into small pieces
cut orange and lemon into wheel-shaped pieces crumble pomegranate on top of fruit put cut up fruit into punch bowl top off with agave nectar pour in Sprite add 4 cinnamon sticks add ice for taste let it sit for 5-10 minutes before serving

2 tablespoons of your favorite hot chocolate mix
3 oz of Christiania Vodka
3 oz of whole milk

Mix all ingredients in a shaker with ice. Serve in a chilled Martini glass. Use Dark Chocolate shavings for the garnish.

2 full tablespoons of lemon sorbet
3 oz of Partida Tequila Blanco
1/2 oz of St. Germain

Touch of fresh squeezed lemon juice
Agave nectar & crushed short bread cookies Dip rim of glass in agave nectar and then in crushed short bread cookies, enough to coat the rim. Mix all ingredients in a shaker with a few cubes of ice and shake well. Serve in a short Martini glass.

Want your kid to be a star pitcher one day? Well you better start now, in the winter, if you want to save his pitching arm. A new study finds that a simple game of catch in the months before baseball season can help prevent rotator cuff injuries, which are becoming more common among young pitchers. They say pitchers should play catch, not pitch off the mound, for a few minutes every day beginning in December, and gradually increase throwing as it gets closer to the start of spring training.

What's the rotator cuff and how do you know if you have an injury there?

We’re checking out some tasty dips that sure to fire up your holiday festivities…

1. Fresh Spinach Dip
Spinach Dip:
1 cup Sour Cream (low fat)
1 cup Mayonaise (low fat)
1 packet French Onion Soup Mix
1 packet Vegetable Soup Mix
1 can water chestnuts (sliced)
10 oz box frozen chopped spinach

Directions
1. Combine the spinach, sour cream, mayo, onion soup mix, vegetable soup mix, and water chestnuts together in a bowl, mix until smooth. Transfer to a hallowed out round loaf of bread. Makes 16 servings (1 cup).

Chef Joshua Tepperberg of Dr. Marinade creates decadent desserts for grown-ups for New Year's Eve. Try his signature Banana Rum Cream. It will be featured at Ivy's Bistro in Tribeca for New Year's Eve and the rest of the winter season. For more on Chef Tepperberg, log onto www.drmarinade.com

Banana rum cream
4 oz cup heavy cream
4 oz Mount Gay Rum
2 tbsp butter
3 tsp sugar
4 bananas (sliced)
a pinch of cinnamon powder (optional)
a pinch of nutmeg powder (optional)
Shaved semi-sweet chocolate (optional)

In a medium skillet:
Melt butter on med/high heat, add sliced bananas and saute for 1 1/2
minutes on each side then reduce burner to medium heat. Stir in sugar (and
cinnamon and nutmeg powders if you so desire) until completely dissolved, then
add rum and let simmer for 1-2 minutes. Stir in cream and reduce burner to low
heat and let simmer for 2 minutes or until mixture becomes thick and creamy.

Serve warm in a ramekin (makes 4 servings in 4" bowls) and sprinkle with shaved
semi-sweet chocolate. This dish also makes a great topping over vanilla ice
cream!
