7:00am Segment Info: Adenovirus Info
A cure for the common cold continues to elude doctors and now a mutated version of the cold virus has turned deadly. Health officials are calling it adenovirus 14 and in the last 18 months it has killed 10 people including a 19-year-old woman. According to the CDC so far, Adeno 14 has caused 140 illnesses in New York, Oregon, Washington and Texas. The median age of the people who died was about 63. One infant also died.
How do you know if you have this Adeno-14?
The symptoms start out the same as a cold: runny nose, cough, maybe some fever and shortness of breath, but then it progresses to become very severe. What's getting everyone's attention is the fact that young healthy people are landing in the hospital and in some cases in the ICU. Those who are at greatest risk are the elderly, the very young, and people with weakened immune systems.
How does this happen?
There are more than 50 distinct types of adenoviruses tied to human illnesses. They cause of the common cold but they can and also trigger pneumonia, bronchitis even gastrointestinal infections. Scientists don't know how it changed. Mutation of viruses is common. According to the medical journal clinical infectious diseases, the ad14 form of adenovirus was first identified in 1955. In 1969, it was caused a rash of illnesses in military recruits stationed in Europe, but it's been pretty rare since then. In 2006 6 percent of Adenovirus samples collected in 22 medical facilities were identified as Adeno 14.
In other news, there's a good reason not to fight with your partner.
That's right, all that stress and worry and anxiety is bad for your heart. Not just emotionally, but physically. British researchers say picking an unsuitable partner may be worse for your heart than not picking one at all. That's because negative relationships boost the risk of heart problems by 34%. They say emotional fluctuations cause hormonal changes that disturb blood flow and increase the risk of blood clotting. To be fair.. After researchers took negative personality traits into account like depression the number was somewhat lower, but it was still significant. The bottom line? Make love, not war.
