You may not realize it but some drugs made in foreign countries are allowed to be sold here in the u-s and there's supposed to be some FDA oversight.

But according to a government watchdog group. About two thirds of foreign drug manufacturers subject to inspection by the FDA never actually get visited... And years can pass before they get inspected even one time. This of course is a concern in light of recent product recalls from china. The FDA is slated to inspect just 13 Chinese drug companies this year. But likely will only see about 2 percent of them.

Sleep is not just important for adults. It's also critical for pre-teens as well.

A new study of children 9 to 12 years old finds insufficient sleep can negatively affect their metabolism as well as their exercise and eating habits predisposing them to obesity. University of Michigan researchers say pre-teens who slept less than nine hours a night were more likely to gain weight than their more rested peers. Sleep affects the secretion of hormones that regulate fat storage, appetite and sugar metabolism. Not enough sleep can change the way the body breaks down sugar and can lead to impaired sugar tolerance... Which can affect weight. In addition to obesity, lack of sleep can cause problems with concentration, mood and learning.

Over 90 percent of poison exposures happen at home. Common cleaners give off fumes that have been linked to increasing the risk of developing asthma. Cindy Latham from Shaklee shows us how you can tidy your house without using harmful cleaners. And in some cases, it cost less to go green. You know that yoga is good for the body and mind.. Now a new study says it's good for heart failure patients too.

In the report, an eight-week regimen of yoga was found to be safe for people with chronic heart failure and it also helped reduce the signs of inflammation, which are often linked to death. This was a small study only 19 patients.. But the yoga routines also improved the patient's exercise tolerance and their quality of life.

So now we have Puppy Cam, and not a moment too soon either because you definitely need a special camera to shoot anything this cute. I hear they also make a camera especially for shooting ugly things, too, but we don't have anything ugly here at CW11, maybe at those other stations they do.

So which diet is the best?

I always say the best diet is one you can live with, so it's not a diet, but a lifestyle choice. Overall, diets that are low in saturated fat like south beach and the Ornish diets do lower cholesterol and benefit the heart while the Atkins diet caused LDL cholesterol - that's the bad cholesterol - to go up by about 7 percent. The numbers went down by about the same amount with south beach and Ornish diets. I personally recommend a Mediterranean diet that's low in saturated fat and involves eating mostly good fats, mono-unsaturated fat, whole grains low fat dairy and plenty of fruits and vegetables.

Sleep is so important for good health and these days it seems like there are more sleeping pills being marketed directly to consumers than ever before, but a good night's sleep doesn't have to come from a pill.

Studies show that for people with chronic insomnia sometimes some simple behavioral and psychological treatments work just as well and even better than medication without side effects. I know what you're saying.. They're too simple.. They're not going to work. But according to the American Journal of Psychiatry an analysis of 21 studies showed that behavioral treatment helped people fall asleep nearly nine minutes sooner than sleep drugs. And sleep therapy worked just as well as drugs, but without any side effects.

It's our final day of Guinness world record week and John and Suki tried to set the record for eating the most M&M's with chopsticks off of a dinner plate within 1 minute... That's a whole lot of sugar and adrenalin for 8 in the morning, but a couple of complex carbon molecules don't scare us... maybe it would at those other stations.

And Suki did!! 23 M&M's in 60 seconds... John put in a great effort and finished with 18, and although he used his left hand, there is initial speculation that he's actually left-handed - we'll let an investigation determine the facts.

We've been hearing a lot lately about MRSA the methicillin resistant staph bacteria that has become more common in our community. Now researchers say they've figured out why this particular strain of staph is so difficult to treat. A report in the journal nature finds that MRSA secretes a compound that causes the body's immune cells to explode wiping out a main defense in the immune system. Imagine trying to fight a war without soldiers. MRSA is taking out the soldiers before they can strike.

Today the doctor told us about oatmeal allergies that can cause eczema in children, baby aspirin & heart attacks, and a natural treatment for bad breath.

Everyone knows taking a baby aspirin a day can help prevent heart attack and stroke, but it may work better for men than women.

According to a new report from Canada that examined 23 different studies on the subject, women with a low or average risk of heart attack may not need to take aspirin. They say, overall when compared with placebo, aspirin therapy provided a 28 percent reduction in the risk of non-fatal heart attacks, but did not reduce the risk of fatal heart attacks.

So should women stop taking aspirin to prevent heart attack?

Moose is currently an NFL analyst and will weigh in on some of this season's football matchups. A cure for the common cold continues to elude doctors and now a mutated version of the cold virus has turned deadly. Health officials are calling it adenovirus 14 and in the last 18 months it has killed 10 people including a 19-year-old woman. According to the CDC so far, Adeno 14 has caused 140 illnesses in New York, Oregon, Washington and Texas. The median age of the people who died was about 63. One infant also died.

How do you know if you have this Adeno-14?

Avocado and Chicken Tortas
From Chef Roberto Santibañez
Turkey works well in this recipe too!
1 fully ripened Mexican avocado
2 (6-inch) sandwich rolls, halved
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
8 ounces grilled chicken breast, sliced
1 cup shredded iceberg or romaine lettuce
1 tomato, sliced
2/3 cup mashed black beans, divided
1/4 cup pickled jalapeño pepper slices

Cut lengthwise around middle of avocado; twist avocado to separate halves; strike pit with a knife blade to remove; scoop out pulp with a spoon. In a small bowl, mash avocado. To assemble tortas: Scoop out the middle of the roll. Spread mashed avocado on cut sides of rolls, dividing evenly. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. On bottom halves, layer sliced chicken, lettuce, tomato, black beans and jalapeño pepper slices. Firmly press tops of rolls on tortas.
Makes: 2 sandwiches

There is a disturbing report this morning about women and heart disease.

A new study finds more women under the age of 45 are dying from the artery clogging disease. For decades the number of heart disease deaths has been on the decline. But this new study found the death rate for women ages 35 to 44 actually went up from 1997 to 2002 at 8.2 per 100,000 women. PSA stands for prostate specific antigen - a protein that goes up when there's prostate trouble, but being overweight or obese can make that test somewhat unreliable. Now doctors think they know why. They say obese men have a larger blood volume, which dilutes the protein. Recent research has revealed that PSA levels are 20 percent to 25 percent lower in overweight and obese men than in men of normal weight. This finding explains why obese or overweight men tend to have lower PSA levels.

Joan Rivers' Sweet Potato Pudding Recipe:
4 lbs. sweet potatoes
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp salt
½ tsp nutmeg
½ tsp ground cloves
2 tbls maple syrup
2 cups mini marshmallows
Ground Pepper to taste

Bake Sweet Potatoes in skins at 375 degrees for 11/2 hours or until tender. Let sweet potatoes cool. Peel and mash with a fork. Add cinnamon, salt, pepper, nutmeg, clove and maple syrup. Mix. Pour mixture into oven proof dish and top with marshmallows. Bake in a 375 degree pre-heated oven for 30min. Ingredients can be prepared ahead of time and then bake to serve. Serves 6-8 people.

Quick Turkey-Chipotle Chili!
The recipe:
Makes 4 servings
Prep time: 10 minutes
Total time: 40 minutes
A delicious departure from the homey Thanksgiving meal, this hearty chili is fast
and full of smoky-spicy flavor. Keep some sour cream, shredded cheddar or
Monterey jack on hand for a cool garnish. Heat seekers can try two to three
chopped chipotles, but you may wish to omit the chilies altogether if you'll be
feeding delicate palates.
1 1/2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, chopped
2 teaspoons kosher salt
2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon dried oregano
3 tablespoons tomato paste
1 chipotle chile en adobo, coarsely chopped
2 cups cooked turkey, chopped into bite-sized chunks
1 (12-ounce) bottle dark beer (a dark lager works well)
1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes
1 (15.5-ounce) can kidney beans, rinsed and drained
Equipment:
Large, heavy skillet
1. Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion,
garlic, salt and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about five minutes.
2. Stir in the tomato paste, cumin, oregano and the chipotle chile. Cook one
minute more.
3. Add the beer, stir to blend and simmer for about eight minutes to reduce.
4. Add the tomatoes, beans and chopped turkey. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat to
a simmer, cooking about 15 minutes more or until thick.
5. Ladle into bowls and serve with garnishes of your choice. (Try shredded
cheese, sliced green onions, cilantro, avocado cubes or sour cream.)

accompaniments: sour cream and apple sauce.
2 cups leftover mashed potatoes, chilled
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons canola or vegetable oil
2 tablespoons unsalted butter

Equipment:
Large, heavy skillet
1. Divide the mashed potatoes into eight portions. Form 1/2-inch thick patties
with your hands.
2. Mix the flour, nutmeg, salt and pepper on a plate. Coat each patty in the flour
mixture.
3. Heat the oil and butter in a large heavy skillet over medium-high heat until the
oil shimmers.
4. Place the patties in the pan and reduce the heat to medium-low. Cook for
about 15 to 20 minutes, or until they are golden brown. Turn and cook the other
side until golden, about 15 minutes more.
5. Carefully remove croquettes from pan, draining on paper towels. Serve
immediately.

This morning the good doctor tells us about a new paternity test on sale at a local pharmacy, the dangers of arsenic to pregnant women, and answers questions about getting rid of cellulite, menstrual cramps & hernias.

Who needs a talk show, Rite Aid is now selling a paternity test that you can do at home.

A company called Sorenson genomics makes the test and it's being sold in California, Oregon and Washington. The test is sold under the brand name i-dent--gene. And costs about 30 dollars. Paternity tests are already available directly to consumers over the internet. This is the first time you can walk right into a store and purchase one. To use it you basically collect cheek samples from the child, father and mother and send it off. The results are provided by mail, fax or on a password-protected web site within five days of the laboratory receiving the samples. There is also an additional laboratory fee of about 120 dollars to have the sample analyzed.

Are there other genetic test kits available besides paternity kits?

Everyone knows that radiation from medical tests like x-rays and ct scans can pose a health risk.

Now a new study from brown university finds pregnant women are being exposed to more than twice the amount of radiation from medical imaging scans than they were 10 years ago potentially placing themselves and their unborn babies at risk. Over the 10-year period, the number of women imaged increased 91% and the number of actual examinations performed on pregnant women was up 125%. Although the average amount of radiation a woman received during any single scan was well below the accepted limit, these cans can cause a cumulative effect.

Here's a diet lots of people are going to love how about pizza and eggs! According to health magazine you can actually lose weight on a diet that includes 5 bad foods.

Like red meat, ice cream eggs, pizza and bacon, but of course there's a catch. The red meat has to be very low in fat, like 97 percent lean. Eggs are truly good for you. The risk of cholesterol can be lowered by using only one yolk to every 3 egg whites. Pizza's ok as long as it's whole wheat with lots of veggies and little cheese, and as for bacon only Canadian bacon will do. It has a third less fat than traditional bacon.

Millions of Americans at one time or another have worked the graveyard shift. And now researchers from the world health organization say burning the midnight oil may be a probable cause of cancer, specifically breast, prostate and colon cancer. In recent years, several studies have found that women working at night over many years were more prone to breast cancer. Men may have a higher rate of prostate cancer and animals that have their light-dark schedules switched develop more cancerous tumors and die earlier. If the scientists’ theory is true, this could affect millions of people. Experts estimate that nearly 20 percent of the working population in developed countries work night shifts.

The charity shopping event that kicks off the holiday season each year and brings together leading luxury retailers, restaurants and galleries on the Avenue. From noon to 5:00 PM, nearly 100 participating Madison Avenue establishments between 57th and 86th Streets will donate 20 percent of the day's sales to The Children's Aid Society's health care programs.

Madison Avenue will be closed to traffic from 66th to 72nd Streets, the only day of the year that the Avenue is closed. Specialty tents will line the Avenue instead of cars. For more information, log onto: www.miracleonmadison.org
