LIONEL LIONEL LIONEL....DA DA DA DA DA DUM!
So I’m sitting in the studio listening to Lionel rant. That’s his job, to rant. And I find him quite hilarious, plus a good source of new vocabulary words. Intrepidity was one tonight. Also limn. The man is a walking thesaurus.
Because of the way the set is configured these days, I can’t actually SEE Lionel from where I’m sitting next to Jim. We are on one side of the studio and Lionel is on the other, with a mess of big cameras between him and us.
But I can hear him just fine. Actually, I lie. These last couple of weeks, I have not been able to hear him that well because raging allergies are destroying my hearing. I am convinced of this. Half the time, my ears and eyes are in so much distress, stuffed with pollen and God knows what else, that it takes enormous concentration to follow Lionel’s daily screeds. Normally I would try to read his lips but his lips are on the other side of the studio with the rest of him and, as I said, obscured by cameras and stage managers.
Well, this particular day, I could hear him pretty well and I was really interested in his topic: Are Video Games Destroying our Nation’s Kids? The Answer? YES!”
I listened with growing alarm to his thesis ( in between guffaws and cackles….mine) which seems to confirm all that I had been afraid of while raising my little boy. That it wasn’t the violence of these games so much; it was the lack of socialization, the isolation, the zombie-like state in which so many of these kids seem frozen when they get hooked.
Up until my boy was eleven or so, I have to say I was pretty strict compared to many other parents I knew. My son was the absolute last kid in his class to get Nintendo. He was allowed only 1 hour of playtime on his computer per day. And no TV at all during the week.
He really didn’t balk too much at this. For one thing, he wasn’t that into television. He was a big reader. For another, he got to play on his friends’ Nintendos on playdates, and I didn’t have too much control over that! But still, I thought I was being a pretty aware Mom, watching what he was doing online, and restricting access to video games, especially violent ones. He simply was not permitted to own any.
And yet, he got hooked anyway. He was just a late-bloomer. He played games that involved hundreds, maybe thousands of other players around the world! Galaxies were at stake, for God’s sake! He got into Japanese anime at the age of 12, which eventually led to his deep interest in all things Japanese.
Now, it’s not all bad. His obsession with these games and anime took him from Stuyvesant High School to UC Berkeley, where he majored in Japanese and then to the country of Japan. Currently he’s ensconced in a little Japanese town in the northern part of the country, with a population of about ten thousand, teaching English to Japanese high school students. He is doing well. He’s learned to work a kerosene gas heater (no central air or heat in the country!), hangs up his clothes on a line to dry, and drives on the ‘wrong’ side of the mountain roads. For a kid who once at the age of seven told me “ I really don’t like Nature! Give me concrete and tall buildings!” he’s doing all right.
He can carry on a conversation with just about anybody and he knows how to give a firm handshake. All is not lost!
I digress. Have to stop now anyway. The show is drawing nigh. Jeesh. I’m starting to talk like Lionel.

Sorry about your allergies, and despite Lionel's rant on kids & video games, (which I generally concur with), I also agree with you that all is not lost as you've shown with your facts about your son's success & responsible behavior. I'm sure there are others who can & do a lot worse.
With regards to,.. ("Everybody Sing);,.. "Lionel,- Lionel,-Lionel,-Li",.... I like him a whole lot better on the WPIX TV newscast than I did back in the day on WABC Talk Radio! Find that I agree with more now also than I generally did back then.

My girls were very prim and proper, all the time. I never had a day of grief from them. The only thing they wanted, was to go to a Michael Jackson concert. Fortunately, they were able to see him.
I am so glad that they did. I won a set of tickets, and I bought scalped tickets. It was strange, but that's how it happened.
A word of advice. Although not always applicable, keep an eye on the boys who want to date your girls. Don't judge a book by its cover.

Lately, I have had runny eyes, itchy throat and a variety of other ills, that haven't hit me in years. I think I have an allergy. When you talked about your issues, I just thought I had a cold. Now I think my allergies came back.
I hope you feel better, because it is a royal pain in the butt to feel so tired and lousey.

Oh dear, boys, boys, boys - they are usually on their best behavior when they are dating our girls. (MAYBE?)
I can see their flaws now, but they aren't that bad. They are my son-in-laws.
The one who had the most promise, has good qualities, primarily because he stands by my daughter, when she is so sick. He is not a good provider, however, he is forgiven for that. She has struggled with money issues. I just wish he could have made her life easier financially.
The one with the earrings and ear clips, turned out to be a doctor. He actually took out all his piercings to impress the father of my children, who I am NOT married to anymore.
So I will say this, everything happened in reverse.
I wish the girls hadn't married so young, but they did, and so did I, but I made a lot of mistakes, until I got it right.

Kaity I don't think your allergies are destroying your hearing. I deal with this on a daily basis, there's so much noise at work, cross-currents of sound, the intercom and everyone talking at the same time but most of all people mumble and don't speak clearly and don't know how to communicate properly and then we get accused of being deaf. A pet peeve of mine.
