If I Thought KAITY Was a Tough Name For A Kid...
Remember that case from Flemington, NJ last year? I’m talking about the one in which two parents gave their kids Nazi-inspired names. As you might recall, they tried to get a birthday cake personalized for their then-three year old, Adolph Hitler Campbell. At first, a Greenwich supermarket declined the order, but a Pennsylvania Wal-Mart later filled the order. And that started the publicity tsunami.
The final result was that, according to an Associated Press report last week, the three children, now aged two, three, and four, were taken from their parents and placed in foster care in January, 2009. They’ve been away from their parents now for almost a year-and-a-half.
According to the AP report, the dad believes they were taken away “because officials felt they were in imminent danger.” It’s not clear who officials felt was endangering them—it could’ve been the parents, it could’ve been the whackos who came out of the woodwork to threaten the family. It could’ve been a combination of both. And because there’s a gag order on the matter, we probably won’t get any explanation any time soon.
I’m not going to use this occasion to opine about the propriety of the state’s seizure of the kids; frankly, I don’t have enough information to have an opinion one way or the other.
But what I can opine on is the nature of responsible parenting. Even if the parent had been Adolph Hitler’s grandson and wanted Junior to carry on ol’ Grandpop’s name, if not his legacy, that would not give him the moral right to saddle that kid with that moniker.
Of course, I know all about free speech—and I cherish the principle. But I also know about responsible—and loving—parenting; and this ain’t it. Just because a citizen can do something doesn’t mean he should.
A kid who carries the name Adolph Hitler Campbell or JoyceLynn Aryan Nation Campbell—the unfortunately named younger sister—will grow into a pre-teen, and then a teen, and then an adult bearing that same name. And with that name will come years and years of suspicion and controversy and maybe even physical torment. Is this what a loving parent wants for, no less imposes upon, a child?
So, no, I don’t have an opinion at this point as to whether these children should be retained in state foster care or returned to their parents. But I do know one thing: if bad parenting were against the law, I’d want to send these two parents away for a long, long time.

As unbelievable as it may sound, I actually grew up in the Bronx as a kid, where one of my former pals' younger brother's was named "Hitler" by his dad legally! We all thought it was a real hoot as little 8 & 9 year old kids, until we got a little older & learned about the horrors of WWI. After that, we just wondered the same concern you pointed out, & what the hell was wrong with his dad naming him that in the first place!
A parent really has to take a child's life & future in serious respected consideration with regards to the kind of names they bestow upon them. It really does matter.
,.... Excuse the typo,... meant to type " WWII".
Another interesting and thought provoking blog, Kaity!
To me, this would be parental abuse because of the mental anguish the children would suffer. Just because there aren't physical scars does not mean the harm is any less. Given these names, the children cannot develop normally because they will not be seen as individuals, and no one can get past those names. That's really cruelty, a twisted cruelty. Either that, or it shows the parents do not have the mental capacity to parent responsibly.
To fail on such a fundamental level, you can only imagine what's in store for these poor kids if the parents were allowed to "raise" them.
Maybe the parents did this to just get attention, claim first amendment rights, and then later write a book! And then someone will offer them money for the movie. Makes me gag just thinking about such possibilities.

It is so sad that there are parents out there that can do something like this to a child. If they name their child this, i have to believe there are other bad things they will do in the future. Kaity is a great name by the way. You are becoming a blogging machine. After you finally agree to go for a walk or lunch with me, you will be able to write a blog titled -Think I might have found the 1. Lol. You are great. Missed you on the fri news. Hope you are ok and have a great weekend.
Hi Kaity,
If I recall correctly, I was watching an episode of Hollywood Squares a number of years ago and one of the questions was about whether or not it is illegal to name your child after Hitler in Austria. I believe that the answer to that question is that it is indeed illegal but I couldn’t verify it in any of my internet searches. I did enjoy reading this blog but I must say that some of the topics that you’re succumbing to writing about remind me of the blog that you wrote about Twittering on May 11, 2009 (especially when I read the last sentence of this blog).
I do look forward to seeing those cartoons that Chuck drew in one of your future blogs regardless of what their theme is. Chuck seems like a nice guy (which is not something that I can honestly say about everyone that posts comments on your blog) and I’m sure that he’s a talented artist.
Ari
I understand how you feel.
My name is confusing too. I am not a Gina, or a Jean or a la de da. I got teased a lot, because, of my ethnic name.
Your name sounds like a Kathy or a Katy.
I love my name now.
Your name makes you unique. Enjoy it!

I had a friend years ago. His name was Sterling Silver.
I knew someone named
April Showers
Kaity is a name you never forget, and
you are someone no one forgets either in
the very best way.
Keep up the blogs; always enjoy your
newscast.
The most confusing of all is Chastity Bono, who is now Chas Bono, who is gay, and as a man, lives with a woman. Now that must be a good story to tell. Not that there is anything wrong with it. It's just darn confusing.
Giada
Sounds like these "parents" are in some serious need of spiritual guidance.
Only a loving parent understands the wrong in their decision to name their kids this way and clearly you point that out in your post. It certainly doesn't take an internet search to figure that out now, does it?
There was a study done some years ago, about strange names. You are doing your children a great injustice by naming them something unusual.
It seems to lead to problems in their little lives and their big ones too.
Normal people have normal names. Sometimes an odd name can be a nice thing to have, but for the most part, it isn't.
I named my kids after movie stars. Actually, they are beautiful names, but, of course, within the norm. I am not particularly a chancy person by nature.
I agree with you Kman....you are on the money, as usual.
Giada
Remember Johnny Cash's son,
"A Boy Named Sue" and the
last line of the song?
Kaity, now really.....THIS IS OFF TOPIC:
I caught the tail end of your newscast at 6:30 and I couldn't believe that you had that awful comic on your show. Please let him go, he is not funny.
You will have better luck with the hundred thousand dollar promo.
Please choose wisely. You will lose your followers.
I heard some "laughing" in the background. Was that you and Jim? If you found him funny, it is truly hard to believe.
Really now - get an elephant or something, and prance him on your half hour segment. That would be an upgrade.
I am not sorry for the above, because, that's the way I feel.
The ridiculous doesn't always work,
BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME....
Really thoughtful and entertaining comments. Thanks to all.
And yes, Ari, I plan to write a blog this week about Chuck, and you will see his terrific drawings!
Your comments gave me an idea for another quick blog, also. Other strange names that people have been saddled with by their parents. Hope I have time to get one or the other of these blogs out tonight!
Best, Kaity
I never heard of this case, the parents are real psychos. I am against what the state did in this case but that doesn't make the parents right. What part of the history books did they miss?
Right back at you, Giada.
BTW, your's is a great name. Surprisingly, the only other person I know with the same name as you is Giada De Laurentiis.

Hi kman,
Thanks for the reply. How about Gwen Paltro naming her baby APPLE. Sounds pretty strange, maybe someone out there has the name BANANA or PEAR.
Now, another curiousity is Cher. She has Chas (Chastity), and Elijah Blue. Did this disturb her kids? Probably to some degree, but, Cher herself is unusual, and so are many other celebrities.
I really believe that the parents of these children are not really trying to be hurtful, they just are trying to be different.
Now, when it comes to HITLER, if it wasn't for the heinous crimes he committed, his name would be a normal one (MAYBE). But, to name a child that after WW2 is criminal.
I think you would agree.
Regards,
Giada *you know I could have called myself Gia, its shorter and cute
I do agree, Giada.
I know someone in their late seventies who's first name is Adolph. And he hates it and goes by a nickname only!
Again, I like Giaaaaada! That's how I would say your name as I greet you. :-)
Ciao.

JmZQtyI
Hey kman,
Do you think I should start using Gia as my name, or is it too late? Actually, I got use to Giada, but I didn't like it when I was young. Don't get me wrong, I do like it now.
I am sure that the name Adolf is not a good idea for a child or an adult. Your friend is correct in using a nickname, instead of his REAL name. He would have been around during WW2 and I just can't figure out what goes through the minds of these parents of children with strange names.
There are many hispanic people named Jesus, however, they pronounce it differently. I think this must be a tough name to have also. What do you think?
Mary, Maria, Marie, are also based on the Virgin Mary, but this is a calm issue. I never heard anyone get insulted by using this name. Now Madonna is another story. I remember when she first became famous, she really played up the religious angle, and used her name as a tool to become famous, in a devious sort of way. She is smart, and very good at business. A cookie of a girl that Madonna, and she's 50 years old. Hard to believe!
Elvis Costello made a name for himself, after all, most of us feel that there is only ONE Elvis. Again, this is a name that is tough to have.
Hey, I could go on and on, but I will stop here.
Always good hearing from you again,
Giada or Gia

To be a adroit charitable being is to procure a kind of openness to the world, an gift to trust undeterminable things beyond your own control, that can take you to be shattered in very outermost circumstances for which you were not to blame. That says something very impressive with the fettle of the principled autobiography: that it is based on a corporation in the uncertain and on a willingness to be exposed; it's based on being more like a plant than like a jewel, something kind of fragile, but whose very item attraction is inseparable from that fragility.
