Sayonara Son!

Dear Readers. Let me start off by apologizing for being away from my blog for so long. Has it really been more than 10 days???!!! Please know I think of you often, but it has been a bit traumatic this past week or so, and I was just emotionally unable to put finger to computer to communicate with you.

Well, here I am now. My son is living in Tokyo. He got there just a few days ago. He told me the room that he rented is tiny, but not as tiny as one of those torpedo-type sleeping units that seem completely claustrophobic to me.

But my boy, who is six feet tall and big-boned, can just about touch both walls if he sits in the middle of his tiny bed. There is a tiny bathroom (sink, toilet, shower), a microwave, and a long table for, what else, a computer and all other computer related stuff. He’s very content.

This is my son’s third trip to Japan and he feels comfortable there. He’s looking for a job teaching English as a foreign language. I swear, even though he’s half Chinese and half Welsh, he was born Japanese! That’s what he majored in at college and what he is passionate about.

I cherish the two months we had together in New York, while he took a Cambridge course to properly learn how to teach English as a Second Language. Even though I worked every day (except weekends), we spent quite a bit of time together.

The best month was the last one before he left for Japan. He had no more classes, so he put himself on my schedule. Which is basically get up at noon, go to work by 3 PM, home by about 11:30 PM. It was so nice to come home so late at night and have my son awake and ready to hang with me a bit.

He got into the habit, a bad one, I know, of eating a late night meal with me around midnight, which I usually cooked. I wanted him to have home cooking, and I didn’t want it just to be on the weekends. So there I was, whipping up broccoli, lemon chicken, and brown rice at midnight for the two of us!

He showed me many episodes of the British series, Dr. Who. And South Park. Or anything else we felt like watching. It was a wonderful way to spendtime with a child who is now a man. I keep having to remind myself of that. Don’t worry. He reminds me plenty if I started doing too much of the ol’ ‘MOM’ thing!

Enough for now. Let’s visit again soon.

Hi Kaity,

My daughter is an ESL teacher, and also has an administrative degree with 2 masters degrees. She speaks 4 languages. She was always a brain, except that she doesn't have very good health. She has had cancer, and is almost at the 5 year remission stage.

Anyway, I didn't think that you were old enough to have a grown up son! You look so young!
You should be very proud of your child.

I'm glad that you enjoyed the time you had with your son before he went to Japan. It should be a wonderful experience for him, although I know you will miss him.

I guess I am lucky, my grown up kiddies live in the neighborhood, and the best part of that now,is my grandchildren.

With regards,

Lee

Your grown-up son has Kaity Tong for a mom,& you two have a special bond between you,.. how cool is that?
I'm sure he'll keep in touch frequently and do really well in Japan. Sounds like he'll also probably be the most beloved English teacher there, too!
Hope you'll give us occasional updates on his life in Japan over time.

In the meantime, treasure those two months, late night dinners & South Park episodes together,.... they sound priceless!

Best wishes!

Hi Kaity,

Considering the historical tensions between China and Japan (and probably culminating with the Rape of Nanking), it would seem extremely surprising that your son (who as you say is half Chinese) would really be into Japan. In my mind, the ultimate expression one can show for their affinity towards a particular culture is to get a Ph.D in sociology and to specialize in that culture (so in your son’s case, that would mean to specialize in Japanese culture). That would sound a little similar to what you did back when you went to Stanford (the Harvard of the West!). Out of curiosity, does your son like that 1986 movie Gung Ho (which I believe is a Chinese title) staring Michael Keaton and directed by Ron Howard? It is after all partly about Japan.

Posted by Tom at December 11, 2009 8:25 PM

Correction, Ari, Harvard is
the Stanford of the East!

Kaity, Sometimes I believe in
reincarnation; it's one explanation
as to why certain people
have shown such strong interest in or
affinity for another race or culture
that is so uncanny that it seems
they may be old souls.

The Japanese are unique because
they assimilate easily whereas
the Chinese...not as much.

Love your 6:30pm show. You are wonderful!

Wow, I would never picture you with a full grown son..I thought you had tiny little ones running around. You look so good and so young! What's your secret, part of it is your lovely hair, please share who is your hair stylist. Especially today I just love it, got to get my haircut just like that!! Anyway, I was away from my mom for a while, wow I missed so much of her. You don't know what you have until you don't have it...so cherish it everytime. Oh well, he'll be back soon.

okay, kaity, you have to cough up and
share with us where you discovered the
fountain of youth.

keep up the great work, seeing you on the
6:30 news is something i look forward to
after coming home from work.

Hi Kaity!
I'm a Mother too...and I know how it feels everytime our children leave...especially to go to a far-off place, like Japan! I get the same reaction from my son, who often accuses me of doing the "Mom-thing". He is 35, and somtimes I am still tempted to put a hat on him (when it is so cold outside!!)His wife gives me a look like "don't you dare"!!!

One day our children will be parents too...and THEN they will understand...your son and mine will be guilty of doing the "Dad thing"!!

We havent seen your son in a long time! Would love to see him when he gets back to the states.

Happy holidays, Kaity!
Love,
Lorri

Japan is such an amazing country, and I can't wait to return someday. I love Hayao Miyazaki's films, especially "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind" - their toilets can be entertaining too! On another note, it's always nice to have someone to visit, a place to crash, and great food to eat!

I love this blog post (and I also appreciate them fixing the site's navigation menu so I can finally get to your blog with just one click...finding it before was a nightmare)...yes, your son may be half-Chinese and half-Welsh, but his love of Japan shows that he's probably a little Japanese under the skin :) I hope you and your hubby aren't missing your "big-boned boy" (LOL) too much! I know your son is going to LOVE his time in Japan!

Just one tiny correction, though. The name of the show is not "Dr. Who", it's "Doctor Who". Nobody know the real name of each of the Time Lords who we know as "the Doctor" which is why they started calling him "Doctor, who?" :)

The fashion scene by the recession of designers has changed affected must be amended to retailers and consumer priorities. But this does not mean people have stopped shopping. In fact, accessories, luxury Fake Replica Handbags are particularly now developed further. Brands such as Gucci, Hermes, Louis Vuitton and Chanel seem relatively unaffected by the economic situation. Instead of buying fashionable clothes that will quickly go out of fashion, consumers are turning to the accessories to make the most out of your wardrobe. Handbags, unlike most clothing and shoes can last a lifetime. For example, a designer handbag made from Hampton & Co., a part of inheritance from generation to generation. In addition, a good sleeping bag everything for daily use, so that women are a good choice and select investment portfolios that will last a long time are.

If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

Between me and my husband we've owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I've settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.
