What Do You MEAN You Haven't Seen Our 6:30 Show???!!!!!!

Day 52 of our new 6:30 PM newscast. About six weeks now. It’s a kick to do, so different from our News at Ten. Have you had a chance to check it out yet?

It opens with Jim standing at a giant wall of monitors, taking the toss from Deborah Norville’s Inside Edition. It’s the top 11 local stories making news that day, and Jim talks to a hand held camera that moves around as he moves about on the set. Reporters appear on the wall behind Jim if they’re out in the field or they’re in the studio and talk about what they’re working on, standing next to the big guy.

And where am I, you ask? Well, I have my own little niche off to the side that we call the ‘coffee bar’. Why, I’m not really sure. It is kind of kidney- shaped and maybe the Morning Show crew uses it to drink coffee to stay awake. I really don’t know. That’s just what it’s called.

Anyway, after the first four stories, Jim throws to me and I handle the next four. My spot has a completely different look from where Jim is standing. Because of the angle, sometimes you catch a glimpse of my knee, especially during the toss at the end of the first quarter hour. That is shot on a hand held camera as well, and well, the photographers seem to like seeing my knee! No big deal.

Now this newscast is where my height has come into play. The big wall is huge, and because Jim’s a big and tall guy, he isn’t dwarfed by it. Me on the other hand, I would need to stand on an apple box, which would work if there weren’t so much movement involved. I can just see it now. One minute you see me delivering some serious news story, next minute I disappear. As I fall off the apple box. Funny, but not very authoritative.

Anyway, the show never stops moving In fact, there is so much movement and so many changes in this half-hour show, one of our veteran stagehands said “I’ve worked Broadway shows that had fewer scene changes!”

So, if you haven’t had a chance to see our 6:30, do check it out! And even if you have…..tell us what you think about what we’re trying to do. We’d love to hear from you.

Thanks for the behind-the-scenes look @ the 6:30 broadcast -I have seen it (and have previously commented on the kinda sideways, knee revealing, view across the desk :-P )and really like it. A great show that distinguishes itself not only from the PIX morning and 10 o'clock 'casts, but also from your early evening news competitors. With ot without apple boxes :-D

I've seen the 6:30 News show & pretty much have watched it from the beginning. It's a nice change up from the usual news-cast formats in general,... but, I'd still like to see & hear more KAITY TONG!
("Knees & all!).

Think you guys have a new hit, though!

I have seen all the changes on WB11 news and quite frankly I am disappointed.
I have watch WB11 news now for 17 years. The mornings I have switched to Channel 7 because I look for the news not another entertainment show. I often have to wait and wait and wait for the actual news to be announced. I miss Craig and Tiffany. In general just the format. News at ten is not as bad, however the help me Howard segment on Fridays is very boring, not worth watching. I think the 6:30 news show is also too much on the level of an entertainment show, I like the desk format better.
Wish I knew why the sudden change.

I love the 6.30 show.
I never miss it!

The PIX News at 6:30 has a fresh look and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an informative news program. The time is great, because it is when many commuters finally arrive at home.
Also, for local news junkies like me, it comes on right after the 6:00 news on the other stations.
Kaity and Jim are great!

Finally got to see the 6:30 segment in full for the first time, what a coincidence.

Kaity, why are you sitting behind that desk while Watkins is standing awkwardly trying to carry the bit in front of that screen? Anyone knows that an audience would rather watch an attractive, stylish, charasmatic, tastfully dressed knockout deliver the news in full view!

I say, let Watkins sit with his knee on the desk.
;-P

I usually catch the last leg of the 6 thirty show
because, I love 2 and a half men and try to catch it on TV whenever I can!

I think they should give you a chair that is good for your height. Next to the other guys, who are tall, it makes you look short.

Regards,

Lee

I also agree, that Watkins is running around too much. Why is that?

Hi Kaity,

Well I must say that I mostly agree with Kman’s comments regarding the 6:30 show, but I mostly enjoy watching it. I especially enjoy watching the interviews that are given on that show. Also, if I’m not mistaken, for the first week or so the camera would catch you and Jim switching places right before the first commercial break. By about the middle of the second week (if not earlier then that) it would seem as if though you’d avoid being in the camera shot right before that same commercial break, presumably because you’re embarrassed about your height. Well don’t be because there is no shame in being a short person! Besides, aren’t you about the same height as Howard Thompson?

I forgot to mention this....tell Watkins to put his jacket back on, it looks more professional.

The 6:30 show sucks as much as the morning show

Kaity and WPIX, the show is different and pretty cool but I want to see more of Kaity Tong. Sorry, I know there's a lot of talent in your place but she's the STAR of New York City. How come I get to see so little of her?

I love the new show, knees and all. Don't worry about being short, youre beautiful and smart...lets see more of Kaity!

Hi everybody! Thanks for all the comments, keep them coming.
Ari, appreciate your concern, but I really am not embarrassed about being short. I've certainly had plenty of time to get used to it. And almost every guy I have anchored with in this business has been unusually TALL...from Tom Snyder to Jim Watkins!
Anyway, to all....we want to hear your thoughts, positive and not so positive. It's all good. K

The 6:30 edition ain't bad, but feels a bit duplicate to the 10 one.
by the way, I recorded the very first one of it back in 9/14, as a memoir

Hello,
Do you know that we've got Barry in the White House and he's even telling everyone a lot of lies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Allan M. Wallin at November 6, 2009 8:29 PM

Hello,
Barry is a very strange name in the White House! And if you don't know who he is look at the White House website!
Can you please run the story on Barry?

Posted by kman at November 7, 2009 9:31 AM

Instead of being stuck behind the desk, have Kaity sit on the front of the desk!

Posted by jeri at November 11, 2009 9:17 PM

Love it, love it, love it!

re: your size--you are a GIANT
in this business!

The 6:30 show is a mess without you, Kaity. The other day you were not on and the crispness of the broadcast was missing. Please to let the camera guy show your knees. Your legs are very sexy!
