Remembering Eva Blum
I got a sad message on my cellphone the week before last. It was from Paul Blum, the husband of a woman I did a story on this past August. Eva needed a bone marrow transplant and we told her story, hoping to help her find a donor match. Here is the story we aired.
Sadly, she died before a donor could be found. On November 12, Paul texted:” At 9:15 AM today Eva passed away. She never made it to transplant.”
I’ve met many people in the course of my news career whose stories I felt were worth telling. Eva was one of them, and she touched my heart. As soon as I shook her hand at her cozy home in Jersey, I felt her warmth and kindness. Right away, both I and my cameraman, Eric, responded to her generous spirit, even though she was wiped out from chemo that day. By the end of our visit, she was hugging me.
We did part of the interview in her tidy backyard, with a large tree in the middle and a barbecue on the patio. After I left a message on Paul’s phone when I got the news of her passing, he wrote this to me: “Hi Kaity. I received your call but was too emotional to pick up the phone. Eva watched you many years on TV. I will always remember you and Eva strolling in our back yard, just like two good friends.”
Paul, I am deeply saddened by the news of Eva’s passing. Even though I spent only a few hours with her, I feel as though we were like two good friends. Goodbye, Eva. We will never forget you.
