That's- a One Spicy Potato! (Wasabi Style)

For the first few years after we came to America, my mother would cook only Chinese dishes at home, even for Thanksgiving. Then this one year, we went to a neighbor’s house where we were treated to the full Western extravaganza, and my little brother and I loved it.

I remember the next year, my mother decided to cook her first Western Thanksgiving meal, complete with a giant turkey. She really put her all into that turkey….stuffing it, basting it every hour on the hour. And it came out beautifully.

Except for one thing. You probably already know where I’m going with this. Yep, she didn’t know about that packet of turkey guts and neck and God knows what else that they pack in plastic or paper or something inedible. The thing you’re supposed to pull out BEFORE cooking.

We ended up eating Chinese.

Now, the following recipe is a favorite of a friend of mine, a nice twist on the usual mashed potatoes. So if you’re looking for a different side dish, you might want to try……

WASABI MASHED POTATOES

2 lbs potatoes

3 tsp wasabi….

Here’s a trick. Go to your nearest Japanese restaurant and ask them for some wasabi. If you’re really hungry, you can order some sushi, and then ask for extra wasabi to go! Most restaurants, especially if you’re a regular, will be happy to do this.

4 oz. Sour cream

½ stick unsalted butter

½ cup buttermilk

HEY, I DIDN’T SAY THIS WAS GOING TO BE LO-CAL!

Salt and pepper.

PREPARATION:

Peel and quarter potatoes. Cover with cold water in a big pot, bring to boil.

Simmer and cook till tender (breaks up with fork) (about 15 minutes.)

Drain, put potatoes in large bowl

Add sour cream butter, ¼ cup milk, and wasabi.

Hand whip potatoes.

Add more milk till you like the consistency.

Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Dear Kaity,
I love mashed potatoes and it just
isn't Thanksgiving dinner without it.
Thanks for the new twist on an old favorite.
I'm going to try it.

My family and I love watching you for many years
anchoring the news.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Hi Kaity,

I've actually been enjoying wasabi mashed potatoes for a few years now -it's great! But you don't need to go to a Japanese restaurant: wasabi sauce (and even w. mustard -excellent on hamburgers!) is readily available, even in Pathmarks and Shoprites.

Quick aside, it seems like you're out from behind the desk more often these days on the broadcasts: I'm sure we're all happy to see that :)

Happy Thanksgiving!

Posted by marie at November 26, 2009 12:03 PM

that's so funny re: the giblet and whatever it is they put in the paper wrap in the turkey.
i remember forgetting it myself.

i think it's a rite of passage or something like that.

thanks, kaity, for bringing up those memories
'cause they resonate.

really enjoy the 6:30pm show and watching
you reporting the news over the years.

happy thanksgiving to you and your family!

Posted by Jim at November 26, 2009 7:38 PM

Hi Kaity,
Thanks for the twist on mashed potatoes,
I'm going to try it--always have more
wasabi than I need when I get the
carryout sushi and never know what to do
with it. Really clears up the sinuses too.

What do you do with your leftovers?
Happy Thanksgiving!
Jim

Could someone please tell Emily to check herself in a mirror before she goes on camara! Last night was one thing in those jeans but that blouse tonight was ridiculous.

Posted by Yeahright at December 4, 2009 10:46 PM

You want Emily to look in a mirror? This from the newscast who has to distract the viewers from the fact their reporters are horrendous and have zero integrity by painting them orange or squeezing them into the tightest shirts imaginable? She needs all the help she can get. Watching her do an interview is excruciating. Nevermind the fact that she almost always ends up talking about herself.

They should also get that clown Mr. G to stop practicing from his moronic schpiels and practice just telling the weather. Maybe then he wouldn't be tripping all over his words.

Or maybe they should just work on not having constant flubs all over the place (camera goofs, misspellings with on screen text, videos playing in the wrong stories, etc.)

No wonder people watch the WB11 news for a good laugh, not actual news.

In my part-time culinary career I worked alongside a sushi chef once and he came up to me one day and said "here smell this." That was in the days before I ever heard of wasabi and so I did and the thing went right through my head, a kind of Zen moment of what the hell was that stuff?? and that was only smelling it not even tasting it. The only other thing as hot is the habanero pepper which my mother had thrown in on the side for Sunday dinner once, WOW your lips burn and your eyes are on fire. I'd be willing to try these mashed but only with a bucket of ice-cold spring water nearby.

I think Yeahright needs to lighten up a little. PIX isn't the most serious news program, but they do an ok job covering the major stories. And if Emily, Lolita, Monica and the others want to show off their prize winning melons, who's to stop them? Actually, Kaity can stop them -- when she shows hers off, the others seem embarassed about how much bigger hers are.

Cora-Ann Mihalik. "Get the wood Cora-Ann. Did you milk the goats yet Cora-Ann?" Ch. 11 News packs alot of hard news into the first 40 minutes, actually it's the one with Ernie Anastos I can't stand. They don't really have any news and even when there's alot in the news they suck. Ernie's a celebrity type journalist, worked for Channels 7, 2 and now 5 so it's only a matter of time before he joins Sue Simmons at Ch. 4. Actually most of the time after 10PM I'm watching Ch. 25, the New York channel with Kelly Choi, plenty of cooking on those shows and she's real easy on the eyes.

Posted by kman at December 9, 2009 11:51 PM

Your blog is going down hill lately, Kaity.
Doesn't surprise me after watching PIX 11 tonight.
Do I really need a report on food aphrodisiacs while watching the NEWS with my family?
And Peter Thorne's report tonight?!!
Bad enough while watching sports or other shows I have to deal with viagra and other dopey ED ads while trying to enjoy TV with my kids (all girls).
I have the feeling PIX News ratings are tanking and this is their answer to improving ratings.

Why don't you guys just plaster the latest Tiger Wood's mistress count if you need ratings?

Thought tonight there was a blog about your son going overseas...

Posted by Lee at December 10, 2009 5:46 PM

I have to admit that I usually catch the tail end of the newscast, because, I watch 2 1/2 Men on Channel 11. It is hysterical. I might have mentioned this before.

Sometimes I think that the news on Channel 11 is more of a "show" than a newscast.

Kaity, you can carry this news "show" by yourself!

Posted by Lee at December 10, 2009 5:50 PM

Sometimes, the commercials are better than the "news". They even seem longer than the "news". Years ago, they ran one commercial, and the rest was serious news. Now it seems like a free for all.

Kaity, I think you should have your own show!

This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
