A spicy recipe that'll cure any rash

So there I am, looking through my email and see a message from an old friend at Channel 4. He says something like “Good thing it’s not prom season. Read about your spotty face in the Daily News today!”

Well, that makes me grab the paper which I’d bought but had not yet perused. (We don’t use that word ‘peruse’ enough) And sure enough, right there on page 118, in Richard Huff’s Tube Talk column, an excerpt from my blog of two nights ago, complaining about what’s been going on with my FACE! Included in the News is a nice photo of me, sans bumps.

I, of course, want to thank Richard for the mention… he always spells my name right (!). And picking a rash-free shot of me.

Okay, enough about my face. What do YOU think about my face? No, no. Tired old joke. What I meant to say was, isn’t this Friday and doesn’t that mean a recipe for the weekend? Of course it does. No silly rash is going to stop me from doing what I normally do.

How about something spicy this time? Because you know hot, spicy foods are so good at calming down redness and rashes.

Here’s another recipe of my mother’s. Who, by the way, has perfect skin.

KUNG-PAO HSIA-REN or SHRIMP WITH RED PEPPERS

1 lb shrimp, shelled and deveined.

1 cup cold water

½ tsp salt

MARINADE:

2 tsp cornstarch, mixed with 4 tsp water

½ egg white

½ tsp salt

ALSO:

2 tsp chopped scallion

1 tsp chopped ginger

1 tsp chopped garlic

4 dried red chili peppers

SEASONINGS:

1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tsp water

2 TBS soy sauce

1 tsp white wine

1 tsp sugar

1 tsp salt

¼ tsp pepper

PREPARATION:

Rinse the shrimp in a cup of cold water, until shrimp turns a little white

Make the marinade. Beat in egg white and salt. Mix with shrimp. Let stand 20 minutes at least.

Chop onion, ginger, garlic, cut off tops of peppers, shake out seeds, chop

Mix the seasonings.

Heat the oil, drain excess marinade, stir fry for only about 15 seconds. Shrimp should curl. Remove and drain.

Add more oil, heat. Then add peppers till almost black.

Add onions garlic, ginger. Stir fry a bit.

Return the shrimp, stir quickly, add seasonings.

SERVE AND ENJOY! Good with any kind of rice.

Kaity,
Your photos are beautiful; both of you and the shrimp. Both are very delicisous!

kaity,
indeed, we don't use the word "peruse"
enough. when i say the word, people stare at
me like i have red blotches on all over my
face!

thanks for yet another recipe, combining
my favorites: shrimp and spices.

were you always this witty when you were a
child? i notice that immigrants, me included,
just love puns, as you seem to, or general
play on words.

wonderful to see you at 6:30pm too!

Hey Kaity, You made the Daily News! That's almost as impressive as the New York Post!
,..But seriously,
Hope the newspaper feature helps to bring in more good Kaity blog fans. The shrimp recipe looks absolutely delicious! I love seafood recipes. Rash or no rash, You're lovely &, "You still da' woman!" Have a nice weekend!

The look on Sanchez's face in that pic is like..."man, I hope I don't get that rash!"

Better print out Kaity's shrimp recipe just in case, Mark. ;-)

Hi Kaity,

Regarding the recipe, I have eaten Kung-Pao chicken, but never shrimp made that way. Thanks for the new recipe.

As for your skin, you look fine on TV, so I think that's what counts.

For some reason, I thought spicy food lead to getting pimples (?).

I never had that problem, I guess I was lucky.

Take Care,

Lee

I think it's a little meta that Huff reports on the local news scene, and now you, a member of that scene, are reporting on him! Ah, the brave new world of the internet.
By the way, the 6:30 cast is on now, and I'm loving the angled shots of you sitting by the desk. And they just did one from an elevation, and we got to see the famous pillow you sit on :-)

I absolutely LOVE shrimp but hate the shrimp salad you see in so many delis. Shrimp should not be mixed with mayo imo but shrimp and broccoli, now you're talking!

Hi Kaity,

Well I see that you decided to post that picture of yourself that I had referred to in my comment about your September 3rd Blog, “Weigh in on THIS.” Probably a few weeks after I did that I got to see the context of that photo on Nick Ragone’s May 29th, 2009 blog (that’s the one in which he interviews you). It didn’t look like you had acme in either one of them. I also like your grin in those photos. By the way (or btw as you would do it; that shows you how primitive I am) there are a whole bunch of photos of yourself online that you can view by googling Kaity Tong Photos, and clicking on the very first search result (which should say “image results for Kaity Tong photos”). To be sure, you do look better in some of those photos then you do in others and I think you will probably be disappointed with how you look in a photo that was originally taken of you for an article that the New York Daily News did on WPIX’s 6oth anniversary back in 1998. Nevertheless, you do look good in most of those pictures. On another note, I was watching the newscast from a few days ago and noticed that Jim and Glenn were able to juggle while me, you, and Mr. G aren’t able to. Despite that weakness of ours, I would have been much more impressed with both Jim and Glenn if they could juggle at least 4 objects at once (I heard that that’s much harder then juggling only 3 objects at once) or even joggling (juggling while simultaneously running).

Hi Kaity,

I made a mistake in my last comment to your fabulous blog. The Daily News's article was on WPIX's 60th anniversary in 2008, not 1998. But the picture of you in that article was taken in 1997, which was what confused me (I should have done the math before I posted that comment; how stupid of me).

Ari
