Weigh In On THIS!
Have you seen our temporary set this week? It's the coffee bar used on our Morning News. It is kidney shaped and small, so we all feel quite cozy. The stools are really high, though, and again, I must sit on three pillows just so you can see me. Even then, I look tiny. My chin is practically on the desk. They have taller anchors in the morning! And look at how G looms over me, when he stands next to me! It's hilarious.
Anyway, last night I did a very satisfying report. It was about the huge reaction to a picture of a plus-sized woman, buried on page 194 of September’s Glamour magazine. It is a wonderful photo, set in an article about how to feel comfortable in your own body, even if you are a size 12.
In fact, BECAUSE you’re a size 12! Because that is the dress size of the average American woman, and just because you're not a size two, or even a size ten, you can be hot, sexy, fit, and beautiful.
The model is a 20-year-old New Yorker named Lizzie Miller. She has lovely skin and a glowing smile. But her slightly droopy belly and fuller legs are what got the buzz going.
Not that magazines haven’t used plus- sized models before. But for some reason, this particular picture really resonated with readers. It clearly struck a nerve. The response was enormous, and almost exclusively positive.
Look at Marilyn Monroe. She was at least a size 12, maybe a size 14, and I bet you'd be hard pressed to find somebody... man or woman... who would not say she was gorgeous.
When the fashion magazines and the runway shows display models who are way too thin, it sets an unrealistic and unhealthy goal for women. Especially young girls, who are so fragile when it comes to their self-image, anyway.
I always say the reason those runway models never smile is because they are HUNGRY.
The upshot is because Glamour’s website was inundated with comments about lovely Lizzie, the magazine announced it will feature many more plus-sized beauties on their upcoming November issue. So watch for it.
In the meantime, here is the picture that started it all. And let me know what YOU think!

I don't know, Kaity. What are we supposed to think?
Quite frankly, it's good to see you in the pinstripe black jacket again! :-)
She looks great to me! There's such a vast variety of different looking attractive women in the world, I personally could never be just stuck on one physical "type".(Except, hopefully, after I marry one). Aside from all that, personality really does count for a whole lot along with the looks,.. and in addition to looking fine, the woman in the photo looks like she has a good sense of herself and sense of humor & would just be plain FUN to be with!
Well,.. that's my opinion & I'm stickin' to it.
I am VERY upset about your recent video of a man abusing a kitten I found out it was in Arizona and have contacted the authorities there, but no answer so far. PLEASE how can you show this outrageous act and not follow through on what happened to that monster. I work in cat rescue and it really hit home. Please I can't get that image out of my mind!

Linda: From this story http://www.azfamily.com/news/homepagetopstory/stories/mesa-news-090109-animal-cruelty-kitten-snake.13ac03472.html, it says that the man was arrested on animal cruelty charges, but released on bond.
That photo is great. I never liked how the modeling industry always showed stick-thin women as "attractive". Let she without curves or flab cast the first stone.
I just came back from the pancake house. Yum....
I think women look sickly if they are too thin, can anyone be too thin... I say YES! ANYWAY, the set you have should accomodate YOU...AFTER ALL, you are a major anchor on that station. Why should you have to sit on pillows. Let them get you a chair that fits your size.
We need photos of you building some of that new set Kaity! Get your hard-hat on! (and a step stool)
Hi Kaity,
Well, I don’t know about you, but I prefer the rather risqué the photo of yourself that can be found on page six of September 9, 2007 issue of the New York Post to this one. It can still be found on their website. Just Google “Mold Attack Chases Kaity Out” [with those quotation marks] and click on the third result (which should be the New York Post’s website). Perhaps in a future blog you can give us the background story of that particular photo. I know I’d be interested in it.

This photo isn't offensive.... but its a good reminder to everyone... America needs to work harder on getting healthy and fit.
I still say...the girls in the 80's are the best role models like Cindy Crawford - she was just in perfect physique!

Hello Kaity,
I didn't find this picture offensive at all - just a perfect reminders to America that we need to try harder to keep fit and stay healthy.
I still think the models of the 80's were perfect role models such as Cindy Crawford - she was just a healthy size not stick thin like today's model.
I think it's great of her to pose like this and it's great that the magazine decide to run it. This society is way too obssessed with looks. What really counts is the person inside the body. She's beautiful and exudes confidence. She is no differnt that anyone else, as we all have imperfections and she represents the average girl.
I think a person has to have a lot of guts to pose in the buff. I guess if you have the body, show it off. I wouldn't do it *not skinny, but I guess if I lived in the 17th century, I would be considered perfect. Weight was a sign of wealth in the old days. Today, the stick thin models do not look rich *although they are, and they do not look healthy. Many are probably on drugs to keep themselves thin.

Anyone remember TWIGGY. Everyone wanted to look like her. From the eyelashes to the bone thin frame, this was every girls desire. I got so thin, that I was sick. I wouldn't eat and I always thought I was fat. This was my first bout with aneorexia.
Sorry for the multiple postings above. They just didn't seem to go through.
Kaity, I have long thought that the
anorexic looking runway models looked
royally pissed off because they hadn't
eaten in years. If any of them were to fall
on the runway in those stilettos, they would
just crumble into a pile of bones.
When we were dating, my husband of 20+ years now found my large appetite interesting and amusing.
It was not a turn off to him because we're still married after 20+ years. Or, he knows to be silent!
You know that saying YOU CAN NEVER BEEN TOO RICH OR TOO THIN? I do think there is such a thing as TOO THIN. Wrinkles on the face show much more on a gaunt and mature face. Well, that's MY excuse.
Lizzie's stomach is not that "droopy" because
she is not sitting up straight, leaning slightly
forward. Most people don't stand up or sit up straight, and that would help with how one looks, also helps stretch those stomach muscles, day after day.
Your blog always provokes such diverse and interesting comments. Keep 'em coming!

P.S. did chris knowels lose weight? he looked slimer tonight, when doing the weather.
If Lizzie is a PLUS-SIZE model, Lord help us all. She's is just a normal-sized woman who thankfully has a bit of a tummy on her. Look at her thighs and her arms. Those are not the limbs of a plus-size model. Liv Tyler's sister, Beth Ditto, even Toccara (from "America's Next Top Model" cycle 7 IIRC) -- now THOSE are plus-sized women. Lizzie is quite attractive, and I am quite happy that GLAMOUR finally saw fit to include the picture of a REAL woman and not a size "minus seven" anorexic in their magazine, but please let's get our terms straight :)
Bottom line: I want to see more of the Lizzies of this world in my magazines, on the runways, etc. and less of the girls who are so thin that an Ethiopian refuge would feel sorry for them.
I know I'm going to get a lot of flack for what I'm about to say, but "most" models and supermodels should be limited to a size 4 or less. If women with flabby stomachs who are overweight and out of shape can be models, then basically what you're saying is that anyone can be a model. Models are much more than just a pretty face. There's a very strict diet and exercise regime they must abide to. Honestly with so many Americans being overweight these days, it's great to see beautiful people who are extremely fit.
I have a friend who likes 'em pleasantly plump, filled out as they say. In the old days beautiful women had meat on their bones and your example of MM is an excellent one but IMO the belly shouldn't be that flabby if you're a model. I'm no one to talk but I do have the sense not to be a model. Ain't a bad pic though but that's as far as it goes, don't wanna see Oprah like this.
Hi Kaity,
I just have to make a few comments. First of all, you need a higher chair. I mentioned this in another blog.
I watched the news last night, and what caught my attention was Watkins saying he couldn't say the word GYRO. Now we all know that if you walk into any diner, you could ask a Greek owner how to pronounce that word. So much news about nothing.
Back to my first comment, you are getting smaller on that new set - they have to accommodate YOU Kaity, after all you are an important part of that news team. Did you ask for a new chair or a higher one. Those guys you work with are much bigger than you are, as we can all see.
Anyway, I love your news reporting. It is precise and to the correct point.
I don't know if I like the new format or not. I was use to the old one. Maybe when it is all finished, everyone will look the same size. I hope so for your sake.
Good luck Kaity, maybe Howard could help you out. After all, you have the availability of Howard on YOUR set!
Happy reporting!
Lee
Just a note to say I think she is brave and very sure of herself. Why is there always fuss about people with weight issues? I can never figure that one out. In fact I am overweight, and I love me for who I am. And I think that makes a difference in a persons self esteem. Yes I do try to eat healthy, and have tried diets and drinks that promised you, you can look like this... but seriously at the end of the day, I am who I am, and if you are uncomfortable with that than you are missing out on a person who can offer a lot to a friendship or even a relationship!
