For the Love of Tweety
When I was ten, my mother bought me a parakeet. It was blue and white, with touches of black in its feathers. I named him Tweety. Mom got Tweety at Woolworth’s. That chain of stores no longer exists, I don’t think, but when I was growing up in DC, we thought it was the best store ever. It was what was once called a “variety” store, kind of like a five- and-dime, but better.
You could buy pets there, from canaries and parakeets to hamsters and pink-eyed bunny rabbits.
It had a cool toy section, with inexpensive (and undoubtedly dangerous, by today’s standards) toys of every kind. It sold everything from plants to school supplies, rakes to underwear. And the best thing about it was the diner section with a long counter where you could climb up onto a stool and order a milkshake or a Coke. That is, if your mother let you. Which in our case, was almost never.
Tweety and I would go out for walks, especially during my summers as a kid. I’d take the entire cage outside with Tweety chirping away and sit on the little patch of burnt grass that bordered one side of the parking lot next to our building.
That was our playground. The concrete space in front of the building, perfect for bouncing a ball, over and over again till you were just about paralyzed with boredom. Or sitting on that little patch of grass, watching ants carrying crumbs through the blades and across the sizzling sidewalk, Tweety munching happily on whatever he could get his beak around through the bars of his little cage.
And then there was the concrete parking lot. Skinned my knee more than once playing tag around the parked cars, getting yelled at by neighbors trying to get into or out of a space. All part of the game. More points if you got yelled at.
When I was a kid, no one wore a helmet to ride a bike or anything else.
And the dangerous things my brother and I used to do to amuse ourselves! My parents would probably get arrested today for allowing us to do them.
There was an abandoned building just a block away that was irresistible to us. It had gaping holes in the floors, rusty iron things sticking up all over, but as kids, it was the lure of danger that attracted us. It was perfect for games of pirates or explorers. A miracle we weren’t killed or maimed.
The mulberry trees were loaded with fruit in the summer, so my friends and I would pluck the berries right off the tree in red, sticky handfuls and eat them. And the honeysuckle that grew wild all over the place. We loved pulling the stamen out to catch the drop of sweetness on our tongues. Cannot believe we never got sick!
Memories of childhood summers. Have to concentrate on the newscast now, so I will share more stories another time. Let's talk later!

Woolworth's... an invitation to adventure as a kid. Me and my friends were big on the chemistry section. You could buy copper sulfate and various other chemicals. We did experiments producing electricity and such with the products we were able to buy at Woolworths.(Hmmm... didn't think we were geeks at the time)
And yeah, that soda fountain section seemed to always be off limits (what was that all about?)
Funny, but when you were expressing disappointment with blogger's block I was thinking a "Remember when" approach might be a good way to go. And, well, you did great!
The abandonded building thing... same here, only our building was burned out... scary!!!!

I,too, always loved the "5 and 10 cent" store :) You could spend forever wandering up and down the aisles checking out all the treasures ! And seating at the counter having a milkshake and a hotdog--well--nothing tasted better !

pestering their parents for some expensive high-tech toys that their parents can't afford and which does not require any imagination!
Kids now are so lazy, they can't have a simple toy and use their imagination.

My fondest memory of woolworth was at the Flushing one (now an OLD Navy). My grandma was ever so cautious about going on the down escalator and my sister and I would have to count to 3 for her to put her foot on the step. I don't remember them having a counter. I think they phased that out over time.
As far as playing goes, times were simpler back then. Many of these safety standards of today were not in place back then, and some of them came to be because of frivolous lawsuits.
Playing with ants was fun, and so was whatever we were doing that caused us to skin our knees.

No question, blogs like this exact one are getting people talking - and thus - the Kaity Tong Fan Club is growing - at a rapid rate! Believe it or not, I had a blue parakeet named Butchy. And he was from Woolworths, the best 5 and dime in the world. The jello squares, cheap make up, and popcorn. It was a little girls dream come true. Another Kaity Fan Club member had two parakeets from Woolworths. These blogs bring back memories few think of recalling. Why would you? That is, unless someone as human as Kaity dares to reach deep into a past that some might deem mundane. Yet to the rest of us who work hard daily, treking down Wall Street and trying to survive among chaos, it is as though we've stumbled onto a pot of gold. The memories spare us from the grind - if not for just a moment. We laugh, smile, and sigh. Then, tomorrow is another day. And another blog we cannot wait to discuss!
I had 6 parakeets all named Perry, after Perry Como. This was my mother's idea. They had a number after their name, so we wouldn't get mixed up. When my children got old enough, I bought them a parakeet. I use to like to take him outside in the summer and clean his cage. He sang when I played the piano, he danced to music. I loved my bird, and yes, his name was PERRY. Only Perry No 1 talked. The others just liked to dance. He was a pretty green and yellow color. When he died, my Perry, my daughter was so upset, she didn't want another pet. It was sad, because, it was during the Christmas season, and everyday when my little girl came home from school, she would go over to the birdcage. I had to bury both the bird and the cage.
*I do believe all the Perrys in my life came from Woolworths too!!!!
