Guess who's coming to dinner... Mr. G!
Now, let me make it clear right from the get-go, that Mr. G gave me permission to write this blog. In fact, he encouraged it. He said he wanted to talk about it tomorrow morning on the radio show he does with Dan Taylor. G and I have been friends for more than 20 years, so I think I know him a little bit.
We decide to go to a nice little Italian place for dinner, very casual and inexpensive, about a block from the station. It begins right away. With the bread. I have had many a meal with the G-man, and every time, I tell him… gently and sweetly like you might to a four-year-old... don’t shove your hands into the breadbasket, rummage through the bread like you’re looking for loose change, then tear up a roll, and stuff half of it into your mouth and the other half back into the basket!
So that’s exactly what he does. Regaling me with some story or other, G soon has PILES of bread pieces and bread crumbs all over our table. These he politely pushes onto the floor. We are soon sitting in an ever-growing ring of breadcrumbs that crunch softly beneath the feet of the waitress as she approaches us.
I suggest we share a pizza. “No, I am lactose- intolerant. I can’t eat cheese of any kind!” he cries.
Okay. He then interrogates the waitress on the size of the portions (this restaurant serves individual OR family sizes of every dish). He finally decides on the arugula salad.
Now, you have to know this about G. He is very picky about his food, but in an unusual way. I have often watched him order a salad with maybe 11 or so ingredients in it, then ask the waitress to hold about 10 of them. Why don’t you just order a plate of lettuce?
Well, tonight, he orders the small- sized arugula salad, and SURPRISE, makes only ONE change. It comes with honey vinaigrette, but G wants oil and vinegar. I can tell right away from the waitress’ expression that the salad comes with the dressing already mixed in. But G persists. Nicely. She says she’ll see what she can do.
And now, we come to the beverage. G is incapable of just ordering a simple Coke or something. No, he launches into a long explanation of exactly how he wants his Cranberry with Ginger Ale concoction, with proportion-control that would stump a chemist. The waitress' eyes are crossed by the time he finishes explaining.
Anyway, I order the chicken parmigiana with spaghetti on the side. When our entrees arrive, Mr. G is upset. “THIS is the SMALL portion???!!! It’s HUGE! I CANNOT believe how BIG this is. I can’t eat all THIS! I didn’t order THIS! Does this have cheese in it?????"
Waitress comes running over, assures G it IS the small that he ordered and NO CHEESE.
He calms down. And proceeds to eat. And that, my friends, is an adventure in itself. I don’t care if it’s salad or pasta or whatever G is consuming, he does it by gently slurping. With his head practically in the plate. And yet he still manages to carry on a conversation. It’s magical.
After complaining that the salad was WAY too big, he is done in 30 seconds flat. Plate completely clean. I have more than half my chicken parmigiana still to go. I remark to G about his clean plate. He eyes my parmigiana chicken and asks to have some of it. He’s still hungry.
“Didn’t you just tell me you’re allergic to cheese??!! You see this stuff on top of my chicken???That is CHEESE!”
G doesn't really say anything, but continues to stare at my plate. With an expression on his face like he's trying to work out a really complicated math problem in his head.
I reluctantly give him part of my dinner, and watch him DEVOUR it. Then wait to see if he breaks out in a rash or starts clutching madly at his throat. No, nothing. He’s happy.
The meal is coming to an end. G wants dessert. Fine.
“Is there ice cream?” he asks our heroic waitress.
“Yes, gelato,chocolate and vanilla."
Then begins a conversation that sounds like one of those Laurel and Hardy routines.
“What would you like?”
“Gelato”
“Yes, what kind?”
“I would like gelato”
“Chocolate? Vanilla?”
“Don't you have any gelato?:
"Yes, we have gelato."
"That's what I want. Gelato."
"Chocolate?:
"NO! GELATO!"
I finally have to step in. “G.” I say, “gelato is not a flavor.”
We have some laughs and finish our meal.
And G insists on paying. He’s a very generous guy and a good sport. G, I hope you think this blog is funny and you get some mileage from it on the radio tomorrow!.

Many times the waiter or waitress will say thanks for making my night, no one else talks to me! You are the best, keep up the great work! Being an administrator in an elementary school, because I watched you this evening, I will be wearing cufflinks with my suit tomorrow!! You rock!

I have had dinner with many picky eaters over the years and my favorite is a my best friend's in-laws who are presently in their eighties. Every time we go out to eat the couple order different dishes and half way through the meal the wife complains to the waiter about her food. I have never seen them pay for both dishes. In fact they always end up paying for only one meal. They have been doing this for over thirty years - which is how long I have known them!
This has got to be one of the funniest stories I have read in a while. And what makes it especially funny for me is that I have a friend that does the same things.
I watch your news every night and think your team is the most compatible on the NY area television. I miss Sal Marchiano even though I love Lollita and think she does a marvelous.

Omg... So funny. My dad does the same thing. He eats and gets crumbs all over. Throws them on the floor...then what ever he eats...half of it is coming out of his mouth and tries stuffing it back in with his pinky finger. I workin on it. My step mom is workin on the push up of the eye glasses, strech and swing around the arm, & pull up the pants part.
