Gimme Back That Filet-O-Fish: Best Commercial Ever!
You know that McDonald’s commercial that’s on the air right now?
Yes you do! The one everyone is talking about...
A mounted fish on the wall (the plaque under him says Frankie the Fish) starts singing, while some burly, bearded guy munches away placidly on a filet-o-fish burger, watching it.
In a weird little voice, the fish sings:
Gimme back that filet-o-fish, give me that fish.

What if it was you hanging up on this wall?
If you were in that sandwich, you wouldn’t be laughing at all!
In the middle of this, another bearded fellow walks in and looks kind of creeped out as he takes in this scene:the singing fish, WHAT the fish is singing, and the big burly guy bopping gently to the music and chewing away on his fish burger. Complacently.
Jim and I actually discuss this commercial. We argue about what the guy who walks in is thinking, what his role is in this drama, what kind of fish is Frankie, what's with that drill the dude is holding, and why do both men have beards. Clearly we need to get a life.
It’s a catchy tune and fun to sing. Albeit, kind of dark. I now find myself breaking into that song at odd moments. Or bopping my head to the tune in my brain. And every time I see the commercial, I grab the nearest person and make them watch it, too. Does it make me want to drop everything and run out to McDonald’s? Not really.
Still, I think the spot is hysterical. But I know people who think it’s creepy. What do YOU think?

LOL I agree. When I first saw it I was cleaning out my closet. I remember stopping in my tracks and popping my head out when I heard those bizarre lyrics, that nasally voice and that retro sounding synth-like music. It's funny, though, because it seems like the fish is making some sort of social statement along the lines of becoming a vegan or something. It's kind of like McDonald's wants you to feel guilty about buying their sandwich--not the usual way to sell your product don't you think?

I think that its a weird commercial. I'll admit its catchy, I find myself singing to it and then I watch it and I'm totally creeped out by it. Honestly, the first 10 times I saw it, I didn't even realize the commercial was for McDonald's until someone brought it to my attention.

Neither of us eats any type of fast food, we just like the commercial. So its ok you are not crazy, its just entertaining.

I see people commenting on this commercial everywhere! It's bizarre to say the least and, in some hypnotic way, catchy. I don't like fish so I'm not about to go and buy one from McDonald's, but the commercial is doing it's job by garnering attention. And I'm pretty sure the people who do end up in McDonald's with a Filet-O-Fish sandwich in their hands end up singing the song the whole time.

It's crazy, at first I disliked it... and found it annoying, I still do. But I watch it and have it down now.
I don't think they are trying to sell the product, a fish telling you,

Great topic! While at work I caught myself singing the song. I just remember when it first came out my 3 yr old froze up to listen to the commerical and just started laughing because he thought it was really silly. i think everyone is talking about this song.

I HATE that commercial SO much. I am a vegetarian and do not eat fish so the fact that I am noticing the commercial does not mean that I will go out and buy the product. I actually take the trouble to change the channel when that stupid commercial comes on. YUCK.
Great commercial! Probably the best since Toby the dog "learned his new trick" in the carpet cleaner commercial. There is something about it that glues me to the tube when its on and singing alog to the tune in my head. I did sing it out loud once and my wife swore I was nuts.

Kaity, I'm so glad you asked.....I HATE THIS COMMERICIAL!!!! When I hear it, the hair on the back of my neck stands up. I don't get it. At first, I couldn't even understand what the fish was singing! The whole thing makes no sense to me. My family laughs when it goes on because they know how much it irritates me. By the way Kaity, you sounded great when YOU sang it. McDonalds should hire YOU! I think its very funny and I enjoy singing the song with the same voice. But I once had the same mounted fish and it sang " Don't worry be happy" which we bought at homedepot. lol And when I first looked and heard it I was as just as puzzled as the guy who walks in on Frankie and the other guy who is eatting the Filet O Fish.lol too funny.

We just have to say that we love this commercial! Talk about a catchy tune! We don't know why they both have beards...but it's just funny. It's strange but you just can't look away! It's comedic genius! We're talking about these two characters who never utter a word.

This is one of the funniest commercials that McDonalds came up with. I really like it. It's stuck in my head, but the sandwich SUCKS! It doesn't taste good, it reminds me of the (my favorite t.v. show) T.G.I.F t.v. series "Teen Angel" a high school boy, Steve and his recently-deceased best friend, Marty, who, after dying from eating a six-month-old hamburger from under Steve's bed. Thats what the Fish sandwich reminds me of. It looks old! But anyhow, i love McDonalds & i do like the commercial, not the sandwich.

I agree with Evan. It seems like the commercial wants to make you feel guilty. I think it has to do with a guilty pleasure too. The sandwhich is so good that the guy eating the sandwhich doesn't feel sorry for the poor fish. The normal reaction would be to drop the sandwhich on the table and stop eating it. On the other hand, the guy that walks in can't belive what's going on. I guess that man will never eat a fish sandwhich again in his life! lol. He had the reaction that the other man should have, to stop and think.
It would be the same to have a cow sing the song and a man eating a hamburger. But I guess they don't come up with that because it would be too cruel. I bet that if they use a cow and a hamburger, they would get in trouble because nobody wants to think about that while they eat.
I'm not vegan and I like animals, but I wouldn't like a reminder of how that chicken or meat got to my table before I eat it.

I think McDonalds wanted to get our attention...and they DID! I can't get that song out of my head either. My wife thinks that song is dumb but I love it.
I love this commercial and I am having a good time reading all the comments. I do have to say that there are some pretty lame ass people here (like the woman and her fiance (Jerry Seinfeld-ish) who looked at each other and laughed), or the veggie girl. Get a life, dooshes. Hate the Cheerios commercial with the foreign actors saying "The box says 'Shut up, Steve'". That commercial sux.

I think that this commercial is a hoot!! My husband does NOT! Now, let the mayhem begin as, whenever the song enters my head, I chase him around the house singing the song in the same voice as the fish. As much as my husband hates it, and runs, he has complimented me on nailing the fish voice to a "T"! LOL

The clock ticked towards 7:30pm, and lo and behold... what should come on TV but THAT commercial. I found myself being sucked by a force greater than myself to the McD's at 38th and 2nd .
This loosely reminds me of one of the first ever TV anchors I worked with in Oklahoma. She had a stalker, a lesbian who claimed she was stalking the anchor because the anchor was "controlling veiwers thru their TV sets". It was sort of a cross between the movies "Carrie" and "Poltergeist"... I think McDonald's may be on to something with this spot.

i absolutely don't like this commercial, in fact, I think it's in the same line as most commercial these days. my friend and I always exchange the weridest looks when we see those really werid commercials.

Every time this commercial is on, I just can't stop watching it. It is so hilarious, even though it doesn't make much sense, but It does make me want to go get fish sandwiches. (2 for $3 now!)
Despite how silly it may seem to some. I think the McDonald's advertisors are right on track with this one. In psychology, I believe the term for this kind of advertising is called the validity effect. That is, they have come up with a catchy tune that's hard not to think about, so that by just remembering it, it is internalized through constant repetition (not being able to get the tune out of one's head) and ultimately, one is inclined to try it. Remember everyone, that stout guy biting into the fish does not appear to be phased by the talking trout mount, he just keeps eating the filet o fish away.
I haaaaate the commercial. It comes on every 3 minutes and the song is irritating. I guess McDonalds is using shock tactics to sell their fish sandwich.

I love this commercial! It makes me laugh everytime I see it and I must have seen it 15 times by now. It's just so wacky. It is interesting and somewhat contradictory that it does seem to be making a statement to be vegetarian or, at least, not to eat fish.
This commercial is both funny and eerie. I think it reminds us that whenever you eat something,be it animal, fish, or plant, something has to die. The two bearded men with tools remind us of work. We have to work. We shouldn't feel guilty about the things that die to provide our food because we have to eat, but we should at least appreciate it. The munching, burly, bearded guy does seem to appreciate the sacrifice made by Frankie the Fish. Of course, he can't give it back.

I think that commerical is the best commerical that was ever made by mcdonalds. when i first saw that commerical it had taken my attention, and everytime they gave it, i started to sing with the fish. And my husband looked at me like if i was crazy, until one day i caught him singing it very low. lol. What can i say... Its a very catchy tune and I wonder why they stopped airing it on Television. I WANT THAT FISH BACK ON TV.
