Thoughts In The Heat of the Moment

When you don't know what to talk about with someone, you talk about the weather. When you don't know what to blog about-well, I figure we should apply the same rule.

So here are some random thoughts on what appears to be our first heat wave of summer:

• Yes, it's very late for the summer's first official heat wave (three or more days over 90-degrees). But I submit that if you took a poll, it would be a landslide for NO heat waves whatsoever. The polling, I should add, must be done on an un-air conditioned subway platform (is that redundant?).

• I just watched one of our competitors leading their newscast with the heat story, their angle being that because it's coming relatively late in the summer, it may catch people by surprise. Uh, excuse me, but that makes no sense whatsoever. If we HAVEN'T had extremely hot weather all summer, doesn't that make it MORE likely that we'll have a heat wave by-and-by? Somehow, I don't think many people were saying to themselves, "mid-August and no super-hot weather.. guess we're in the clear now!" Well, now that I think of it, there probably WERE lots of folks thinking just that. Because people are, you know, funny.

• I don't like extreme heat, but since two-thirds of the summer had passed without 90-degree-plus temperatures, I figured I'd see the glass half-full, and be able to deal with the steamy conditions arriving now with a much better attitude. Didn't work.

• Which is correct? Heat wave (two words), or heatwave (one word)? I'll give you a clue: heatSTROKE is one word. Go here for your answer.

• Just like an individual is believed to be either a cat person or a dog person, let's assume for a moment you are also either a hot weather person or a cold weather person. What do you think determines that? I suspect it's whatever your geographical/genetic roots are. For instance, I'm less comfortable in extreme heat because I descend from the tribes of the pink people of northern Europe. We're quite comfortable when the going gets chilly, because we simply don another wooly mammoth fur or plunder villages to steal their fire. But when the sun bakes down, we burn like little babies and plunder villages to steal their shade. For folks whose ancestors were from the southern hemisphere, I would think it's the opposite: they love the heat because they tan perfectly and there are more places to go swimming; but when the mercury drops, they whine excessively and wonder how the pink people are able to manage so well. I invite any doctors or ethnologists or climatologists to weigh in on this, although I think my analysis pretty much touches all the scientific bases.

That's all. Keep it cool. And, yes, that was a trick clue on the heat wave/heatwave quiz.

Yes, mostly of us don't like extreme heat, but it is summer nevertheless, which should have this kind of heat back in July.

If this type of heat starts in August, does that mean we will have a prolonged summer? I certainly hope not, as I love the bitter cold.

Hi Jim;

Well I guess as some disagreed but yest with this heat there is global warming.

Well Summer is back, how about that,Summer returns, now is time to have some fun. Beaches are brimming with old and young, looking for relief from the baking sun. Let's hope we don't lose our cool: but rather enjoy summer in the city, and just have fun.

who is jennifer? I like channel 11 news at night, but like most don't like change.

global warming??? LOL
Some people would do anything to keep pushing this agenda.
If there is really a global warming, the heat would come back in like May instead of this delay that made the summer feels like spring.
By the way, despite what liberal medias keep promoting, not all scientist agreed on this agenda. And no, CO2 is not the greenhouse bad guy and the cause of heat.

What do scientist have to do with politics?? Global warming is responsible for changes in weather patterns, which explains out very late summer.
Have you noticed that we no longer have snow storms, but ice storms?? Also due to a chage in weather pattern.

Too bad Palin is not governor anymore - we should all go to Alaska to play in the snow!

Where is Kaity Tong?

yes, the same old "the cold and delayed heat is because of global warming".
This logic is pretty smart, you can't possibly lose the argument.
This is the same principle of the stimulus package can "create or save" x millions of jobs. This statement wins either way, politicians no need to worry any backfire.
No snow storms? Are you living in a cave???

Jim....I love you guys, but could you tell Mr. G to either, 1) lose weight, so we can see the weather map 2) make the weather map smaller, so we can see the weather map, 3) have him stop flailing his arms, so we can see the weather map. Please, he takes up the whole screen and I don't like switching to another channel so we can observe the weather map and see it without someone waving their arms around like a disco dancer.

I'm still trying to figure out what that thing was a few weeks ago that they didn't call a tornado.

I wanna know what the hell happened to J-Lo's sister? Was easy on the eyes watching the My9 News on a Saturday night after a hard day at work.
