'Rethink Autism'

Hey, folks.. On our Sunday night newscast, I’ll be reporting on a new company called “Rethink Autism,” which I believe could be a real game-changer for all of us parents of autistic children.. Check it out Sunday, and if you’d like more information about the company and what it does, go to their website.
Have a great week!

Mr. Watkins,
Last night, Aug. 9th, you were talking about Autism and some programs that are available. I was not able to listen to your report. I have a nephew, age 17 and he is autistic. He also has behavioral issues. I would appreciate it if you would please send me some information and contact numbers.
Thank you,
Helen Mangas

I just watched the video of this segment and I find myself divided. On the one hand it is great that this is out there as an option for parents. It is good that this is based on actual ABA practices. They seem to be on the up and up for what they are offering, which is good because there are a lot of so called "cures" out there taking advantage of desperate parents.
On the other hand is the money part $100 a month is a lot of money for the family of a disabled child. There are already many financial burdens placed upon our families. I was blessed to recieve training classes and go to workshops for free through my childs school. Parents should ask about this posibility at their childs school first if they are really interested but can not afford an option like this.
You should always look into anything you have to pay for carefully there are a lot of "snake oil" salesmen out there taking advantage of parents.
Thanks for your time everyone and God Bless.
Hi - Jamie from Rethink Autism here! Thanks to Jim Watkins for airing this piece, and for the questions and comments posted above - we appreciate your interest in our web-based autism treatment platform. As someone who has worked in the field of autism education for many years, I know first-hand the challenges that many families face in accessing quality services from qualified professionals. I certainly invite folks interested in Rethink Autism to also check out our impressive list of Scientific Advisory Board members (http://rethinkautism.com/aboutus/AdvisoryBoard.aspx) so you can get a sense of the expertise behind Rethink Autism. Our goal is to make this kind of expertise available to everyone in a cost-effective way, not just those families who have access to the top ABA programs. Unfortunately, $100 does not buy you much in terms of ABA treatment (@ 1 hour with a highly-trained therapist as Jim Watkins noted in his piece). Now - with Rethink Autism - any family in need can have IMMEDIATE and ONGOING access to the highest quality ABA treatment tools for a reasonable cost.
It's wonderful that there is a program like this available. As a special educator for children with Autism, I've seen parents try anything and everything to help their child, including buying the snake oil from the salesman. Rethink Autism sounds like a great program to train/ teach parents ABA techniques. while it is true that $100 does not buy much ABA treatment from therapist, but it can still be a huge amount for a family with a child with Autism.
Perhaps financial aid can made available for those families that qualify.
Congratulations to Jamie Pagliaro for starting this agency and offering services to parents as this is sorely needed! I remember our interview in Harlem for the Charter school.
Helen Mangas: look into VESID and see what services they can offer your nephew. Also, plug into autism society at www.autism-society.org, and autism society of America (don't know web address) and Autism speaks. You can google all of them for their web address. I hope this info helps you!
RESEARCH PARTICIPANTS WANTED!
Are you a New Jersey parent of a child with autism aged birth to 21 who is currently receiving or has received ABA interventions? If so we are seeking research participants for a study to be conducted. Participation in this study involves completing a brief online survey which will only take 5 to 10 minutes of your time. The purpose of the study is to determine parental perceptions as to the efficacy of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) teaching interventions for their children with autism.
If you are interested kindly contact: Nicole Turon-Diaz at 973-650-7986 or nturondiaz@verizon.net. You can also use the following link to go directly to the study and participate: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=_2bNMDc3EHUp8fM38T3KN_2f7w_3d_3d

I was driving my son to school this morning and listening to the radio when i heard a certain radio station making jokes about people with special needs. I think this is a disgrace and these people should be put off the air. They're ignorant, insensitive and cruel and they lack empathy, compassion and decency. As a mother of a special child i would love to educate these people about the challenging and stressful situations i have to face, and the joy my child brings to me on a daily basis.my son is my life.
