The Subliminal Blogger: The State Senate Mess

Like other New Yorkers, I wrap up this work week filled with disgust about what’s been happening in Albany. The defection of two Democratic state senators term limits to the GOP caucus seemed to put Republicans back in charge of the upper (and I use the term very loosely) chamber after only term limits five months of control by Democrats. The result: nobody has any idea WHO is running the show. Democratic senate leader Malcolm Smith buh-bye is holding on to his leadership position, but just barely. It may be that the only way for Democrats to keep their erstwhile majority is for them to give Smith the heave-ho already gone. Give the man some credit, though; after a party’s been out of power in a legislative chamber for 40-years like Democrats were, it’s not easy to lose it again after just five months.

Governor David one term Paterson has been able to do nothing to stop the chaos. Now the courts will weigh in to determine if the Republican takeover was legal. With so much important business they don’t care to be addressed, New Yorkers can ill-afford to have the wheels of government grind to a halt with only ten more days Hallelujah! left in the scheduled session. New Yorkers can only hope term limits cooler heads prevail to get the work done in the short run, and that in the long run, this week’s debacle will once and for all impress upon everyone the need for comprehensive reform in the way the state’s political business is conducted. throw the bums out The problem is figuring out exactly how to go about that. Term limits

Why some words are smaller?? That makes the whole thing hard to read...

I really don't care which party controls the Albany legislature. I do care about putting NY ahead of party and personal agendas. They say politics makes strange bed fellows . . . this doesn't apply anymore. If they would all sleep TOGETHER (figuratively) we would all be better off. If they ever put party differences aside and work for the common good of the State we could all dance together in the streets.

I got the small print. Term limits need to be implemented but there is very little chance of it ever happening. Term limits need to be adopted at the federal and state levels. There are far too many legislators in place that have amassed power and wealth at the tax payers expense. That said, how can we expect legislators at any level to cut their own power or purse strings. The U.S. President is subject to term limits. He gets a four year term and can have one more four year term consecutively. He can't control these limits. Supreme Court Justices get life long terms and control this by their resignations. Legislators get what they want, they do control their terms. Their terms, however, ARE controlled by the VOTER. Unfortunately, the voter is just as guilty of putting party first as those they vote for.

Hi Jim,
Love the pix news;best local news period. If Elliot Spitzer was still in office would we have this Senate mess? I wonder how many of these elected officials were being investigated before Spitzer got pinched. The governor can't do anything. His rating is soooo low that it seems like everybody is just waiting for his term to run out. What do you think? Shout out to Kaity.

Thanks for reading.

What are these boses going to do next at taxpayers expense

I don't think any one who don't show up for work without calling your boss for any reason. It's totally unacceptable. I don't think any boss can tolerate theirs workers don't show up for work, don't report for absences. We (the NY tax payer) are the boss in this case. I suggest who don't show up for work for weeks without good reasons (doctor's note etc...) all get fired. We treat all equal, either public or private officials are alike.
