Bloomberg Meltdown: If You Were Offended

***UPDATE ON BLOOMY'S THURSDAY MELTDOWN:

Mayor Bloomberg today made what sounded like a tepid apology to the reporter he chastised yesterday during a nationally televised news conference. Blogger Michael Harris, who’s disabled, talked with reporters about the experience today, saying Bloomberg approached him this morning about what happened. Harris described it as a “conditional” apology, with Bloomberg saying he regretted the incident “if” it offended Harris. But the reporter says he accepts the gesture, and is ready to get on with his work.

Lots of people making comments on the blog were critical of the mayor’s behavior during the news conference. So what do you think now that he’s made an “apology?”

It was the correct thing for Bloomberg to make an apology, after all, what else could he do. If he did nothing, he would get a lot of flack, so he had to "correct" his mistake. He had no choice, even if his heart wasn't in it. Maybe he felt that he did nothing "wrong". Who knows? After all Bloomberg is not the warmest person on this planet.

well i am very offended cause he should get fired and get some one loyal and nice and some one who has a good side..

i found it unprofessional and was quite uncomfortable when
i watched the Mayor. He reminded me of a bully
in a schoolyard with all his friends in the background
watching what he would do next.

I don't really care what Bloomberg does. It doesn't effect me at all. Maybe this is just a NYC thing.

I feel that the Mayor was completely out of line and showed a total lack of good manners and breeding. I believe that deliberately making anyone feel that uncomfortable was totally out of line and unnecessary. Mayor Bloomberg is taking his position as Mayor to the extreme and showing that his ego is way out of line. This is the man we need for a third time? I think not. How rude and ridiculous.

I wanted to say that on the news tonight at 10 the lady anchor called the meeting Obama attended in Trinidad a "Latin American" summit. That is incorrect. It is an "American" summit. All the countries of America are attending except Cuba which was expelled for being the only Communist country in America.

what bloomberg did was uncalled for i think wait i know he should say sorry and he needs to stop thinkin he better then people he had no right to do that

His true arrogance truly exposed .He looked at that reporter like his sees most people outside his inner circle. So sick of him.

Posted by Stephen at April 17, 2009 10:25 PM

I was recently in a situation where I was in a wheelchair (temporarily). I know what it feels like to be in a wheelchair. Since I am a somewhat self-concious person myself, I have a good idea of how he feels. I feel very bad for him and am dissapointed in mayor Bloomberg for being so insensitive. Since he was staring at him for two minutes, you'd think he would have the common sense to see that this was not an intentional disruption.

Posted by Brooklyn at April 17, 2009 10:28 PM

I was not offended. It was funny, look at the guys in the back. The reporter is embarrassed, but that type of behavior by the Mayor on camera is a little ridiculous. He could have taken on a light hearted approach to it instead, even if just to save face.

Posted by Justice at April 17, 2009 10:29 PM

I'm offended that the mayor apologized!

There was a disruption and he gave a dirty look! People need to LIGHTEN up!

Posted by Angel at April 17, 2009 10:31 PM

Hi Jim, Do you really expect this arrogant prick to offer a true apology ??? You should know better than that. This guy thinks He is too good for that.Let's just hope someone does the same to His aging mother and then interview Him and ask how it feels.

Posted by Nicole at April 17, 2009 10:34 PM

I think what Bloomberg did was extremely uncalled for, and his behavior towards the situation was rediculous. There were many different ways he could have dealt with the situation that wouldn't have embarassed Michael Harris on National televison. Poor guy! He deserves a much better apology than what Bloomberg gave him. I don't feel the sympathy at all. Let's put Bloomberg in Michael's shoes and see how he feels!

Posted by KC at April 17, 2009 11:04 PM

with Bloomberg saying he "regretted the incident “if” it offended Harris."

Are we sure it is an apology??? It is just the altitude of "I don't think I did anything wrong, but if you feel bad about it, sorry".
Yeah, like people said, although he should, I don't expect Bloomberg to apologize. He don't care - he don't have to. He is a billionaire who is going to run for mayor for the third term by changing the law (aka self-appointed king), using the economy as an excuse. Why does he need to care?

Posted by Politically Un-Correct at April 17, 2009 11:28 PM

Once again people with too much time on their hands will blow things out of proportion. They want to crucify someone according to their agenda and by gum they'll twist anything they can to do so. You can tell from the first 5 words of most of these responses that these people hate Bloomberg and just want a forum, ANY forum to criticize him.

Any professional speaker (teachers, reporters, etc.) will tell you how hard it is to stand up in front of a crowd and speak, let alone have distractions or hecklers - no matter how experienced. The mayor has to babysit this town of people who have learned to be offended by ANYTHING! And of course, demand an apology when they're the ones who caused the disturbance.

"...the press office always makes an effort to accommodate Mr. Harris’s disability, even renting a wheelchair-accessible van for him when transportation to a mayoral event is being provided for city hall reporters." Did anyone think that this man is used to getting special treatment and can't stand being treated like everyone else? Why does he bring a tape recorder with music and a hair trigger play button to a news conference? Nowadays, everyone uses iPods.

People, if you don't understand manners, protocol or even mild consideration, then do some research and use your time in a better way.

Posted by Patty at April 18, 2009 1:36 PM

The Mayor met with Mr. Harris for three minutes on Friday. Apology given - no matter how lukewarm. Apology accepted - no matter how tepid. Both men will and should get back to their respective jobs and hope that some lessons were learned from what transpired on Thursday, April 16th . Notably, the Mayor should hone his social graces skills and Mr. Harris should always stay clear of pushy photographers at future news conference events.

Posted by Mike H. at April 18, 2009 10:37 PM

Two good lessons, Patty. All Mr. Harris has to do is make a slight behavioral change. All the Mayor must do is change his character and personality. No-o-o-o-o problem!! Don't we wish that when Bloomberg said "If I offended you...", Harris had enough chutzpah, to say "Yes Mayor, you did."

The arrogance of His Arrogance will not yield to public criticism. But if he gets rewarded for it with a third term, it's the voters I blame the most. That's because they are being no less complicit in this insult to democracy than is the jerk who leaves his keys in the car and emerges from a store 20 minutes later as the victim of another grand theft. So, Earth to New York: You still have elections. Use them to send this guy to Bermuda, not for vacation but for retirement with all the time in the world for him to be infected with its warmth!

In regard to Mayor Bloomberg's apology, which some have called half hearted let me say this : to err is human and to forgive is devine.

Bloomberg is an arrogant elitist who understands
billionaires. All others are unimportant. Notice his pursuit of mega projects (stadiums) in the midst of a recession. Money that could have alleviated the MTA mess. His fuming at this handicapped reporter is indicative of how he feels about others. He has a history of not supporting the average person.

I'd like to commend Jim Watkins for saying it as it is - when someone does wrong no matter who it is Jim speaks the truth and in this day and age with political correctness that is quite refreshing. Thanks Jim.

Bloomberg is a callous, cold, penny pinching bozo.
DO NOT VOTE FOR HIM, OR HE WILL CONTINUE TO RUIN THIS CITY !

Jim, I like you have a son with autism and doing everything i can for him. I am asking you for help to expose a class in wayne nj that left my 6 year old unattended and he wonderd off and nor the teacher or the aids knew. I found him down the hall in a gym all alone and i think parents of children with autism should be conserned and aware about this class and the lack of supervision. I never been more scared or upset in my life. My wife sent an Email about this to pix news and help me howared. I would love to have your help on this.

Jim, sorry to say, because of your comment, I and my husband will NOT be tunning in @ 10:00 and we like the rest of the crew, but because of people like u, just have to put out there, ur opinions of whom got elected and who lost. I really wish you all would go back to the day of professional journalism. Report the news not comment on it. Hmmm, those where the days.

Is this fool, who wants to run for a third term as
mayor for NYC insensitive or what?! He shows his
lack of understanding and needs for lower-class
community and now he exemplifies the same for
the hadicapped. He is arrogant and doesn't respect
the term limits that we the people voted for.
People must remember that Guiliani said the same
thing when he wanted to stay in office; using the
excuse "you need me now" after september 11, 2001.
Bloomberg is doing the same thing for this chrisis
"where in a recession you need me, I can get
Wallstreet back on it's feet with my expertise."
If Bloomberg was such a big expert he would've
seen the meltdown and intervened! He loves the
spotlight and have done really nothing since he's
been in office. He's like former president Bush,
putting fear in people if he doesn't get things
his way. News Station throughout the city should
exploit the negative and incompetence of this
mayor. His officers do something bad and
outrageous he's nowhere to be found. As if that
has nothing to do with him. When plaxico Burress
had the gun situation he was all over T.V. giving
press conferences. Why? Because Plaxico is
someone of status and Bloomberg decided to get
some of the spotlight as the mayor laying down
the law. People get caught with guns all the time
he doesn't give press conferences about his NYC
gun registration rules. Jim Watkins, please use my
comments to enlighten the many unaware
New Yorkers of this tax that, raise the price,
mayor Bloomberg who didn't want Attorney General
Cuomo releasing the names of AIG workers who
received bonuses. He says he's independent while
in office; knowing deep down inside he's always
a republican at heart.
