Happy New Blog Post
I’m back from a nice week off, ready to fire up the ol’ blog as we kick off 2009. Regular readers have no doubt already noticed that Kaity, once again, “stepped in” for me, and wrote another post. On my blog. The reason I put “stepped in” in quotes is that unlike the first time she did this, I wasn’t “told” she’d be doing it “again” and was therefore very “surprised” when I went to “my” blog during my vacation and discovered “Kaity” had gone all “rogue” on me. “Again.” (If you actually make air quotes with your fingers each time, you’ll find that reads quite well).
And what she wrote! Here I am, brave enough to say in those promos for our newscast that she was my “best friend.” Me, a man, showing my feelings. Isn’t that what women want? And what do I get for my trouble? Mocked, that’s what! Again I say, mocked! Sure, she has a point when she writes that I have no other friends, but there’s no need to rub it in. Anyway, I taped those promos before I got a Facebook page, and now, “Kaity,” if that’s even your real name, I have 89 friends! 89! I have not personally met many of these people, but still.
Speaking of which, I am now findable on Facebook, for those of you who also don’t feel the need to actually know your friends. If you search for “Jim Watkins” with “Tribune,” my smiling, slightly grainy face should come up. So find me, friend me, and we’ll teach Ms. Tong a thing or two about true, meaningful friendship in the digital age.
A few other random items I wanted to mention: My family spent a few terrific days skiing at the Butternut resort in the Berkshires in Massachusetts. It’s only about two-and-a-half hours up the New York State Thruway, and it’s just fantastic for families. My three sons (I love saying that, and I do see myself as being more like Fred MacMurray as I get older) all had lots of fun and took some great lessons. They have an excellent program for special needs skiers, and Liam took a lesson all three days we were there. My wife and I want to thank his teacher, Pat White, for her kindness and attention, as well as marketing director Matt Sawyer and Al with the ski school. They made it possible for Liam to have a ski experience just like any other kid, and he loved it.
In fact, I took some video of one of his lessons with Pat. Here it is, although it might not be all that thrilling if you don’t happen to be one of his parents. Still, he’s awfully cute, and although he can’t do much turning or maneuvering coming downhill, it’s nice for my wife and me to see him so comfortable riding his skis, and at least enjoying the sensations and environment.
Well, I can’t seem to recall the other random items I wanted to mention, so we’ll call it quits for today. Anyway, I need to go talk to our website guys about getting a password so You-Know-Who doesn’t start “guest blogging” again without my say-so.

That's really cool for Liam, it makes me want to go and ski... if only I wasn't afraid of the falls.
Wow, that's awesome! He's really good! I would've fallen. I'd compare myself to Bambi on ice. (Remember that scene where Bambi runs out onto the ice and his legs fly out from under him and he struggles to get back up? Yea, that would be me...)
You two had me giggling at the end of the show today.
Wow, you guys were hilarious at the end of the show tonight! You should do that more! Kaity needs her own blog, to complement yours.
BTW, can you update us on the interactive newscast thing, with facebook? I know a station does that in Florida, WTSP. It should be really neat to see...you guys are better than any other station in the city. Keep it up!
Hi, folks, thanks so much for your great comments. To James, we are definitely going to use Facebook more for real time interactivity in the months ahead.. I'll keep you in the loop on that.. and to Jen (I'm really not a grinch, just slightly dark and cynical) and Mel, Liam would be so proud of your compliments. Thanks for checking in! Best, Jim

How can you tell if a baby has autism? My grandaughter is 9 months old and is so quiet and reserved. She has had her vaccinations and I was worried that they may cause autism, although my daughter has been careful about spacing them out. I never saw a baby so content. Should I worry? Or should I worry if she cried more. She is not afraid of strangers and goes to anyone. She has a good attention span and does react to her toys. I worked with autistic children many years ago in school, and I do know that they don't like loud noises like bells and most of those children didn't talk, although I knew one who had fits of rage and talked a lot. There is so much discussion about autism these days and the "maybe" so called vaccinations causing it. Most babies do not go to strangers. She does get frightened by loud noises. Maybe I am worrying too much, because my other daughter has cancer. A FRIGHTENED YOUNG GRANDMOTHER
PS: Jim, I am a big fan of yours and respect your blog. Please respond to my concerns, because I would like to know what symptoms to look for.

If you and your daughter (you never mention if she shares these concerns) are really worried, go see your pediatrician and talk about it.. many more doctors are aware of early autism signs than even when my son was diagnosed nearly ten years ago (we were lucky to have one that knew even then). It's tough addressing the vaccination issue -- it's become the third rail of autism "policy" and will bring in many, shall we say, negative comments to this blog, no matter what I say. The preponderance of research done to this point doesn't indicate a link, I think I can say objectively. But many in the autism community strongly think otherwise.
Either way, no point being frightened and worried all the time. Get your granddaughter checked by her doctor (if her mom is okay with that) and take it from there. 9-months old? She's probably fine. But keep an eye on her speech development and level of interest in interacting with other kids. And find a good website that gives you good objective facts. That's a parent/layman's best advice.
Thanks Jim, yes I must run this by my daughter, you know something interesting? She talks about autism a lot, and was very concerned about the shots the baby had. My other daughter *the one who has 2 boys and cancer, didn't want to give her kids shots, and her doctor would have gone along with this, however, it would have meant getting special permission for the boys to go to school. Is it the high fever or just the chemicals that may or may not cause this to affect the brain cells of the children. My boys *grandsons are ok. Honestly, I think it is pollution and other enviornmental factors causing all these problems today. LEE
