Dear Jim Watkins... by Kaity Tong (hijacker of the Jim Watkins Blog for one night only!)

WHAT is this obsession with blogging? I am telling you, I DON’T GET IT!

So why, perhaps you are asking yourself, are you now writing one? Because of THE PRESSURE!

I am not kidding. First, there’s my co-anchor, Jim, who is a blogging fool. And he has managed to make me feel inadequate, simply by blogging CONSTANTLY. Our offices are right next door to each other, so even when his door is closed, I can see him through a window that runs the length of the door from ceiling to floor. And I can tell you, it is troubling. If not downright disturbing, to see my colleague staring at the computer screen, with a faint sheen of sweat on his brow, eyes glazed, a rictus of concentration around his lips. This is one handsome guy we are talking about here, but when he’s blogging, not so much.

Sometimes, I even catch him chuckling to himself, as if he’s penned an especially witty line, and is really happy with himself. Or, frowning at his computer screen, his mouth set, his fingers flying over the keyboard. MUST BE A DIATRIBE OF SOME KIND!!

It concerns me because frankly, at times he appears slightly unhinged. And I say to myself, THAT WILL NEVER BE ME!

You see what I mean?
You see what I mean? This was Jim in his office just this week, just chuckling away at his alleged wit.

Let me just tell you, before Jim got into this blogging thing (which is fairly recent), we used to have conversations, visit each other in our offices, laugh, exchange confidences. Now, I feel very much like the neglected wife whose husband has been seduced by porn on the Internet. Jim, after all, is my ‘office’ husband, as we often say in this nutty business of ours, and I am his ‘office’ wife. And, believe me, we have had words over this addiction of his. Not at all good for our relationship.

Then, there are the powers that be. Yes, one of my bosses (who shall remain nameless), has taken to saying, out of the corner of his mouth, “Thought about blogging, yet????” whenever he walks by me in the hallway, his eyes straight ahead, not making contact, his stride never slowing. It’s troubling. If not disturbing. (His name is John.)

(Actually, he never does that. His suggestions are, in fact, quite subtle, gentle even. It just feels that way to me.)

This is like a bad homework assignment on a subject you could care less about, but you’ve been brainwashed into thinking you won’t pass the course, if you don’t turn it in.

So, alas, here I am. I am actually blogging. I have actually blogged. This is the first one I have ever written, and, if I have anything to say about it, the LAST.

Please, do not send comments to me in response to this pathetic first effort (the handful of you ‘dear readers’ who are out there). I am embarrassed enough as it is. Please be kind, and if you have even gotten THIS far, pretend you have better things to do than read blogs. Please.

Don't sweat it, Kaity! I think you guys--you, Jim and the entire PIX crew--are great. Don't worry if you feel that you're not blogging enough. I'm very saavy when it comes to computers, electronics, & the Internet, but I don't have limitless time for hobbies like blogging, Facebook, and MySpace. You're not alone!!

Keep up the good work!

Kaity, dont worry about your blog. I have to admit it is the first one i ever have read. It was kinda fun reading what you had to say. You and Jim and the whole morning and night crew are super and i enjoy watching the news because of you and the crew. Keep up the great work and you look fab on tv.

nice

Dear Kaity--

You're breaking my heart! And here I thought you hijacked Jim's blog because you read my comment to his last one... hmmmph.

In any case, like Frank said, don't sweat it too much. Blogging is pretty overrated at times, as we see people seeing bloggers as the modern newscasters. Not here though, no matter what news I read online, the telly will always be on for evening news. Nothing like a more personal touch when you have someone talking to you.

You shouldn't let the idea of having a blog as something negative, it's a very cathartic thing where you can vent about whatever in the world and talk to others that share/doesn't share your views. :)

i know how you feel
people in this "modern era" have no time for actual human interaction so the only way to go is well- blogging, texting and just about anything techy(yeah i just made that word up)

Kaity... I know your pain, blogging has become seemingly popular overnight and because "everyone" is doing it- kinda makes you wonder what's wrong with me? (Since I'm not so into it)

Blogging is fun though- cause as I see it- it's just an online journal- a way to get some things off your chest- a way to connect with other minds "out there" in the world. Some of us like reading blogs because face it- we like to converse, we're kinda nosy and we love to talk! Am I right? I think the best blogs are those that come with a super strong opinion because it encourages others to get into the conversation- either to agree or disagree...

I say- keep blogging. Its helpful. Obviously you HAD SOMETHING TO SAY and you WANTED TO BE HEARD - and you spoke your mind- and now, don't you feel better? yeah, I thought so...

:-)

see? not so bad huh?

Hello kaity
I have to say this is my first time reading a blog... You kept me very entertain... I logged into the internet on my phone after watching you and I said to myself " I have to check this out" ... I wonder what Jim thinks about this I hope he replies... I also wanted to say I love watching you guys I make sure I get home before 10pm to watch the news you guys are always having so much fun...

Thanks for the advice. I use my blog to keep track of comments like this, because up until now any that a copied with ClipCache could disappear in a crash or attack and I want to know what I said where to someone else like ClipCache keeps track of through the Windows clipboard. I was so happy to have met you a few years ago at CBS street reporter Lou Young's birthday at his place next to the Schubert's summer place he said, he married to a former television journalist I think. We had been in high school together on Long Island, in Selden, NY which at the time we didn't know was named after the judge who was a "character witness" at Susan B. Anthony's trial Upstate New York for having posed as a man to vote, a "taboo" for a judge. No we had the beginnings of the end to the "draft" right in our public school, ca 1970, the Marine Corps JROTC, not very "PC" while the undeclared war was on and though soon to end, subject to the draft lottery for Selective Service sponsored by a NY legislator. More recently I had been researching the first "National Guard" down in the Bowery, when our Nation first met here in NYC, later again after 9/11, the second amendment guaranteed the "state militias" now known as the National Guard, recently, how I don't understand, assigned to foreign legion service, depleting some of our finest citizens perhaps.

Anyway thanks Mr. Watkins for this opportunity to say hello to Kaity Tong again. And watch those blogs, I was fired for having a blog just before the MTA strike, on the "swing shift" for the archaeology of Battery Park. But not given a reason. Maybe they thought I talk to reporters everyday!

My husband and I drop everything to watch the 10 o'clock news, mainly because of you and Jim. Why PIX has so many rotten programs before yours, is beyond me. I guess to attract the young people, but you two are tasteful people and most of the other programs are disgraceful and tasteless.
As far as blogging, I'd like to see you writing more and Jim's columns are very interesting. Keep up the good work, on the air and on line.

You and Jim are the best. I love watching your news program. I never miss it, that's a fact!

Hello from upstate NY! By upstate I don't mean just west of the Hudson...I mean UPSTATE, as in the Finger Lakes region. Though we are a ways from the city, we watch you faithfully every night. You and Jim are a great pair and we love your humor.

Kaity, you don't need a blog to be cool, so don't let those 'boys' harass you too much. =) I did find this post of yours quite funny, though, and wouldn't mind if you started posting regularly. =)

Happy holidays to you both and all the best in the new year.

Hi Jim and Kaity! Jim that's such a cute picture of you, laughing at your own blog/masterpiece. You are a really creative and informed newscaster. And Kaity, you are, too. Your post was great. You two are the best anchor team on TV. And I have watched a lot of TV in a lot of big cities. I think it's great that Kaity can poke fun at her "anchor hubby." And I bet Jim and lob a few good ones Kaity's way also. More power to the "power couple" of TV news! -Laurie

Hi Kaity,

Thanks for teaching me about this blogging thing, too. I'll continue to read if you continue to write.

As for TV news, you are the only reason to watch these days. You deliver with sincerity, sometimes humor, and always compassion. Few broadcasters truly understand the passion of Journalism. Kaity, it's obvious that you do.

Thanks for your commitment. New York loves you!

Dear Jim,

Kaity is a lucky girl to work with you!!!

Great Blog!!!

Posted by Mike at June 23, 2009 11:47 AM

Jim,

Would you please do me a favor and let Kaity know that making jokes about wearing the burka (last night June 22nd 2009) is about as funny as watching courageous Neda being murdered in cold blood. By making jokes about wearing a burka in cold weather, Kaity is showing a blatant disregard for the oppression of women in other parts of the world. Now maybe Kaity doesn't understand that the burka is a mode of dress that is used to force women into submission or maybe Kaity was trying to make light of a difficult subject. Either way, she looked ignorant, heartless and pathetic.

And we don't want any of your viewers thinking that about her or you or the channel now do we.

Mike.
