Michael Mirabella was fed up. There was an abandoned car in his neighborhood and it was bugging him. It was an eyesore. He hated seeing it just sitting there at the corner of 44th St. and Northern Blvd in Astoria. It was a sports sedan, a Chrysler 300C with Maryland plates. Most likely it was stolen. The car windows were all smashed out. The car was sitting on cinderblocks because all four tires and rims were gone. The stereo had been ripped out. And all the local ticket agents were doing was slapping tickets on it. At a certain point, doesn’t one of them call it in and get it investigated and/or towed? Why wouldn’t anybody do the right thing?
“It’s been here for about two weeks. I’ve called the cops. Nobody ever showed up to take it so I called to see if you guys can get this taken care of. I live on the corner of this block. I feel bad because it’s somebody’s car, they’re obviously missing it somewhere and it’s here and nobody is doing anything about it. And it’s an eyesore!”
Mirabella called 311, he called 911..nothing.
Howard asked him why it bugged him so much.
“It just bugs me,” said Michael, “because clearly something is wrong here. It was a nice car. It’s just sitting here collecting tickets. I hear on the news all the time that after a certain amount of tickets, the traffic cop is supposed to make a report to get the car towed away and it’s just sitting here with about 6 or 7 tickets on it and still there is no one to do anything about it.”
Howard checked the tickets. One was from May, another from June..it’s been there even longer than 2 weeks.
So Howard called the precinct. They promised to check it out. Sure enough, the next day, the car was gone.
Mirabella was amazed.
“ When I walked down the block I was like, WOW, that was really fast. You guys did it really quick!”
We aim to please, Michael. But really, it’s the NYPD that came through..albeit at our request.
“Thank you so much,” said Michael, “because of you guys now, my block looks a little bit cleaner. We don’t have this sitting here anymore, so thank you! Thank you, Howard! You’re awesome!”

This reminded me of a situation that I had in my neighborhood. People were parking far away from where they belonged and took up the whole street. What an annoyance. Some of these cars were dreadful looking. We made several calls to the police and they kept giving them tickets. Eventually most of them left. I have my own driveway, and would never park in the street, however, there are others in the neighborhood that need parking spaces. An empty space must be like a piece of gold these days.
