Roommates Say They Were Taken By Movers

Moving.jpg

When a moving company says their estimate is the final price, watch out! The estimate is rarely the final price.

Christina and Laura have been friends since they were 11 years old. Now they are roommates sharing an apartment in Hoboken, New Jersey.

They just moved into a new place a few weeks ago and it was not without drama when they hired a moving company called "Progressive Movers" to help them move.

Laura says, "It was three guys for a minumum of three or four hours for $70 an hour."

She says when she called "Progressive Movers" to make sure there were no extra costs, she was told "again and again", there were no extra costs.

When she asked about boxes; there were still no extra costs. Even when she mentioned they were located on the second floor, she was again told there were no extra costs.

Laura and Christina say they were only moving a few blocks away and Progressive assured them, it was only going to cost them $270.00 dollars.

Laura and Christina then received an email from Progressive, again confirming the cost was to be $270.00. Nothing about extra costs.

But on moving day, the roommates say the Progressive movers began packing for them, even though they said they didn't need that service. The movers brought in their own boxes and crates. Then once the truck was loaded up, the movers handed Laura and Christina a new handwritten bill for $1,300.00.

They had even charged the roommates for using their stairs, even though the building had an elevator.

Christina says "I went crazy."

Laura says "I freaked out! We're like this isn't nice, we never told you to do this!"

The roommates called police, but police said they couldn't do anything because it was a civil matter.

The roommates then were told to call Progressive's boss. They argued on the phone, but got nowhere, that's when they decided to call Help Me Howard.

Howard and the roommates decided to pay Progressive Movers a visit at their Paterson, New Jersey address. But as soon as they got there, the door was closed and locked on them.

Howard tried talking to the movers, but they refused to discuss the issue or even meet face to face. Even a cellphone call went nowhere.

Because their Progressive sign looked suspiciously like the Progressive Insurance logo, we called the insurance company to see if they had any affiliation with the moving company.

Progressive Insurance let us know that they have absolutely no affiliation with Progressive Movers and said their lawyers would be contacting the Paterson movers shortly about their sign.

Unfortunately, the roommates may have to take Progressive Movers to small claims court to try to get their money back.

When you are moving and need to hire a moving company, do your research first.

First remember that an estimate is just that...an estimate. Costs can accrue and a reputable mover should at least make an appearance to your home to eyeball the items being moved in advance, before they can even make an estimate of what it should cost. If they are making an estimate over the phone or via e-mail, be suspicious.

Research their reputation with the Better Business Bureau.

To make sure you are dealing with a licensed mover, check them out at with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Finally, the best place to get a good reference? Ask your friends and family who they used on their last move and were they happy with the job?

That pretty messed up to take advantage of couple of young women. These guys should be locked up...

There is no need to take these guys to court...I will personally serve them justice!!! Nobody messes with Jose "The Hammer" of JUSTICE!!!!

OMG! That happened to me yesterday. Father and Son Moving company (out of Newark, NJ, but servicing New Jersey and New York) quoted me at $192/hr for 7 hours. At the end of the day, they threatened to reposses my belongings if I didn't pay almost $2500. Make sure you read everything completely when signing, and always get a flat rate in writing when moving.

Posted by Tom F at September 15, 2009 1:48 PM

These moving companies are so shady. Its no wonder nobody likes using them.

Posted by kc at September 15, 2009 4:02 PM

that's why getting a trusted moving service referred by someone is safer

Posted by mike p at September 15, 2009 4:46 PM

People are delusional. THEY QUOTED YOU AN HOURY RATE YOU MORON. So let me guess, So you sit there on your fat ass and watch them work for 13.2 hours at 192 per hour and then scream victim when your charged $2500. You are the criminal.

Some people need to get a life and stop trying to take advantage of the system and maybe they would not get taken advantage of themselves. The only immoral and unethical thing this company did was charge these two girls for flights is stairs,i agree that is wrong because they are being billed hourly and stairs would just increase the eamount of hours anyway.

seriously though who in there right mind believes that they would be able to move an partmetn for $270? nobooodddddy these two girls got the lowest quote they could possibly find, kn Probably ingored every reputible company that gave them a more accurate quote (becasue they were so god damn cheap) knowing qiute well they were on an hourly rate, let the movers pack there apartment and then when they finished said "i didnt ask you to do that" well then why did you let them you retards? And if your belongings were not packed in boxes and you didnt want the movers to do it, well then how do you presume these belongins go on the truck? should they walk themselves boxless.

Wake up!

Haha. Looks like someone from Progressive got wind of this story-and clearly needs to learn how to spell. If people were up front with prices then things like this would never happen, which is probably why these girls were looking for an hourly rate in the first place. If you are dealing with people who haven't used movers before how else would they know what insane charges could accrue when they are dealing with shady, shady people. Now thanks to Howard - they do. Good luck with that name change, Progressive.

Posted by Mark S at September 15, 2009 6:15 PM

I'm just confused as to why the people from Progressive didn't come out of their office to talk to the girls if what they think they did was legitimate. Cameras or not, if they are supposed to be running a professional business and had justifiable reasons for all these charges, then they should have had no problem at all talking to them. Scam artists!!!

Posted by eugene p at September 15, 2009 6:22 PM

WOW These girls need to go to school cause 3 hours at $70 an hour DOESNT EQUAL TO $270 LOL...
Howard You should have seen this... OR maybe you need to go to school also

Posted by eugene p. at September 15, 2009 6:29 PM

Hi Mark The media changes storys in there favor. They will never play a story that will say that the moving company did everything corectly.. LOL

Posted by ken at September 15, 2009 6:32 PM

I heard about this company before and it appears to me that they are a bunch of con-artists! It's a dam shame that these bunch of crooks took advantage of these women. My advice to the women, someday you will regain yourloss. To those crooks who stoled the women's money, be prepared to loose more than $1,300.00 or whatever you charged them. God don't like ugly!!!!!!!!!!!! We need to get together and boycott this place. Shame on you!

Posted by Gabe Horn at September 15, 2009 6:36 PM

I can't believe a "professional" business would come onto this public media website and fight back with words like "retard" "fat ass" etc. Your image is shot and this is no way to try and recover. You need to be nice and ignore it otherwise fix it by giving the girls what they rightfully deserve. You can't get business, even as a shady business if you don't follow the customer is always right rule. Hopefully your company doesn't go under for your movers sake, but whoever runs the business should be ashamed or unemplyed, which ever comes first.

Posted by mike p at September 15, 2009 7:06 PM

They absolutely should have come out to defend themselves, maybe they are a crooked company and not coming out would definetly imply that. HOWEVER, if i look for a mover and shop for the absolute cheapest price (which is what these two ladies did) far well knong when every other reputible company says its goign to be three times as much, then this is something i should have exspected.

Not to mention (pay attention here) this lady said in her video "they packed my boxes and i didnt even ask them too" Well lady let me ask you a question? on move day since the movers were there ready to work, WHO THE HELL WAS GOING TO PACK THEM? if they werent already packed.... they have to be packed by someone to go onto the truck, so the movers packed them, she sat there and watched (AS THE HOURS ROLED ON) during this HOURLY MOVE and then WHEN THEY WERE FINISHED!!!!!!! started screming as a victim, come on people WE are not that stupid are we???

A lot of movers are crooks I give you that but Not every mover is a crook! Maybe this guy is annnd im not denying that he should have not hid like a fool! but this is clearly a person who was given an estimated amount of time for an hourly rated move and then wants to cry when it took too many hours, you shouldve gotten a flat rate then, however some flat rate companies are even bigger crooks.

Its very simple people, you cannot pay for a physcially demanding service where your valuables are at stake and stil shop for the cheapest price, you get what you pay for in a moving industry!!! dont be a cheap ass, look for good quality with a reasonable price NOT THE CHEAPEST PRICE

Posted by eugene p. at September 15, 2009 7:37 PM

"But on moving day, the roommates say the Progressive movers began packing for them, even though they said they didn't need that service. The movers brought in their own boxes and crates."

Listen Nothing is free in the world and if you see the movers packing thing then you would have to pay for the packing materials and like one of the girls said that she didnt want the movers to pack here things. (Why would she tell them not to pack here things.. If for example a moving company says it will be $270 to move me and when they showed up at my house and started packing things i would be impressed that i am paying only $270 and that includes packing)
"She says when she called "Progressive Movers" to make sure there were no extra costs, she was told "again and again", there were no extra costs."

Well i think if she didnt want them to pack here things there should be a reason why... ( for example she knew it was extra cost)

I THINK THIS STORY IS FUNNY AND WE NEED TO HEAR THIS MOVING COMPANIES SIDE OF THE STORY

Posted by Debbie Cwiek at September 15, 2009 7:46 PM

Its hard to believe that they are in business. They take advantage of people when they are most vulnerable. Funny they never mentioned any extra charges until all their belongings were on the truck. What do they do then? They have no choice but to pay the outrageous fee. Progressive movers needs to be exposed for the scam artists that they are. The girls should definitely take them to court. They should not get away with this again!

Posted by mike p at September 15, 2009 8:32 PM

DELUSIONAL!! These "things" need to be packed by someone, if the girls didnt pack them and the movers were there then i assume that you are saying the movers shouldve walked out the door and went home?? i mean everything that fits on a box must be in a box on the day of the move, someone is responsible to pakc these items prior to the day of the move. the movers cant wait around on the actual move day for the lady to pack them, this would increas the waiting time "hourly rate" remember!!!

Progressive Movers does take credit for moving Lisa. We have tried contacting the WPIX team multiple times to show that we are not a fraudulent company and provide our customers with all information prior to their move as we did for Lisa. We have been trying to present WPIX with the contract proving that Lisa received multiple emails and signed contracts acknowledging her charges. Lisa was charged $470.00 by our company which resulted in us completing 5 hours of labor and 2 hours of travel time during her move at $70.00 per hour as she was promised with no stair case charge.

We are almost certain that if WPIX reviews over the contracts and e-mails they will remove this story and provide us with an apology from Help Me Howard which we do intend to receive. The airing of this show has brought emotional distress and embarrassment to our entire company which is not fair. We have consulted with an attorney and were given advice not to take any extreme action until we hear from WPIX. Unfortunately if we do not hear from WPIX, we ourselves will have to show proof that we are not “crooks” by posting copies of the contracts and e-mails that were given to Lisa as well as taking legal action. WPIX represented Lisa’s side of the story but never looked into speaking to our boss and hearing our story (our employees were scared to appear on camera and the boss was away) and now that the show has aired it seems like nobody wants to speak to us. Our employee’s conversation with Help Me Howard was only taken out of context for entertainment purposes (or so it seems). We completed Lisa’s move to the best of our ability with no surprises. We do hope WPIX will contact us soon so that we can resolve this issue, we have reached out to them because we do care about our business and possible future customers.

I would also like to thank everyone that has supported our company through this difficult time.

Posted by eugene p. at September 15, 2009 9:07 PM

Hi howard why dont you post copies of contracts or even the bill of landing that says that the girls paid $1300????

Posted by Sarah at September 15, 2009 9:35 PM

I myself have moved with Progressive Movers Inc. based out of Paterson nj and was EXTREMLY satisfied. I feel so sorry that this company is undergoing such scrutiny. When I hired them they had informed me of all the information, sent me emails, came for an on-site estimate, and completed the move very smoothly. I do believe that they came across customers that are out to make other lives miserable because they are unhappy with there own. I have recommended this company to many of my other friends, family and co-workers. They were all very satisfied as well. I feel very bad for Progressive Movers. I hope they do receive an apology...these girls are unrealistic.

Posted by Sandra at September 15, 2009 9:44 PM

After reading progressive movers reponse I am excitied to see the end result...I am also excitied to see the contract and e-mails it they do get posted if WPIX does not answer.

I used this company like 3 weeks ago to move in to my apartment. I got an estimate of $340 and my final bill was $410. I was very happy with there sevises and recommended them to my roomate who just seen this show.. But he says he is still moving with them I think these girls are just looking for publicity. I would like to go on a date with a blond one shes kind of cute.

Posted by tony at September 15, 2009 10:21 PM

no matter what, written or not...EXTRA COSTS SHOULD HAVE BEEN MENTIONED PRIOR TO LOADING! its courtesy, and avoids arguement. they were not professional and they got caught! hopefully everyone learns from this. Unfortunately, progressive was the example.

Posted by Todd at September 16, 2009 10:16 AM

Dear Progressive Mover's owners/employees (aka eugene p and mike p),

Does anyone from Progressive Movers know how to spell? Also, your sentence structure is horrendous. Some examples:

"partmetn"
"sevises"
"qureous"
"shouldve"
"bill of landing"

Help Me Howard was denied access to the contracts. They were further denied in person interviews and phone interviews.

Progressive Mover's logo is attempting to look like Progressive Insurance's logo. Scammers always try to look like a reputable company. That way, the unsuspecting customer makes the psychological connection. These scum's at Progressive Movers are true scammers. It's a text book case!

I really hope this goes to small claims court. The emails the victims received will hold up well in court. Also, Progressive Mover's tainted unsigned contracts will be laughed at (or as Progressive employee eugene p so professionally says "LOL") by the judge.

Companies like this do not last in the long run. They rely on recommendations and since their reputation is so bad they will not last.

In the long-run, it will be the victims who will be "LOL."

Posted by OC at September 16, 2009 1:08 PM

Mike P,
You are the MORON. Use spell check if you cannot spell. Anyway, 7 hours (the amount of time the move took) at $192 would have been $1344. LEARN TO READ IDIOT! Furthermore, I am not fat nor am I lazy as I took a day off from work to assure they were actually working. AGAIN 7x200(that's close to 192) equals 1400. You see, all you have to do is act like it is two 7's--add them (multiplication comes next)--that's 14, then add the two zeros at the end. Mike P, I am available for Mathematics and Language Arts tutoring.

Posted by Christopher at September 16, 2009 1:42 PM

UM when progressive movers refer to this woman LISA who paid $490 it is not referring to the LAURA and the CHRISTINA that are aired on the story. Progressive Movers is just trying to cover up their name by providing a fake client named LISA that does not exist in this video so they can show that they charged her only $490 when these two women got screwed out of over $1000 of their hard earned money whey they were told the costs would be $270.
Also, in reference to the packing things in the boxes, maybe the girls just wanted the heavy furniture and things they could not lift and maneuver themselves to be moved and had planned on moving the other stuff themselves after everything else was in place and settled. But since they figured there would be "no extra charges" they said what the hell why not let them do it.

Posted by mike p at September 16, 2009 1:46 PM

THEY quoted you an ESTIMATE (below i will post the definition of estimate)for 7 hours @ 192 per hour. So once again for all who missed this, you sat there and watched them worked for 13 hours, and let me get this striaght you wanna claim your the victim because your ESTIMATE!!!! took longer then they estimated, because these poor souls worked for 13 hours ON YOUR HOURLY RATED MOVE, you were taken advantage of?

Go play in traffic please and do us all a favor

Estimate - •an approximate calculation of quantity or degree or worth; "an estimate of what it would cost"; "a rough idea how long it would take"

We hope to hear an answer from WPIX soon, because we believe it is in WPIX's best interest (we never wrongfully charged Laura).Progressive Movers will continue with updates and hope this issue settles soon.

Mike P and Eugene P work for Progressive Movers. Their attitude, language, and ability truly reflect the way the company is run.

The scammers at Progressive Movers Inc. can not spell, use proper grammar/sentence structure, and do basic math. There are too many examples in their responses to list.

I have never witnessed a company that lacked so much class and education. You guys are a disgrace.

Follow Link For Contract

http://picasaweb.google.com/ProgressiveMoversInc/Laura?feat=directlink

Progressive has not heard back from WPIX yet. Therefore as promised, to maintain our good name, we are posting up our contract with Laura (showing her signatures agreeing to all charges). Also we are showing proof that we did not charge Laura over a thousand dollars that she claims on help me Howard.

Prior to Laura’s move date (even before choosing our company), she received multiple e-mails with all the information. After calling and booking with our company, we sent out an estimator which gave her a quote of 3men @70ph. He did assume the move would take less time because he was told all the belongings would be packed up prior to the move. Laura paid for 3 men @ 70 per hour a stair case charge for $150.00, and a discounted long carry charge for $150.00

We have been reading the comments on this web-site daily. I understand there are a lot of people that dislike us by how the story was presented on TV. We supposedly ripped off two young girls didn’t tell them anything that they were getting into, and when help me Howard appeared didn’t want to speak to him. Now this is our side…now that you see the contract the girls were not charged over $1,000 by our company, they were informed of all information and signed to it prior to the move. When help me Howard appeared with cameras by our office the boss was not there to speak to them, the employees were scared to appear on TV, but did agree to sit down with help me Howard and the girls to review the contract and answer any questions which may have called confusion. A lot of things were taken out of context as they normally are on TV.

With all of this we understand some people may still be against us, but we figured we’d share our story including all evidence with you since Help Me Howard has no interest in the documents or speaking to us off camera or in general since he has aired the show.

Guys this is nuts! Its true the best way to move is rent a truck get some friends and see how fast your furniture gets destroyed. All these moving companies are the same and you must read the contracts. I know the moving business very well as I was going to open my own moving company, but I realized its not for me.

They will tell you an hour rate plus packing materials guess what the whole point of a moving company is the packing. Any person can get someone to carry furniture for almost nothing but what will end up after the move is done??

These guys are all pros and unfortunately this is the only way this business works.

Howard, I watch you every night. I know this business, and these guys are not even close to the worst! They seem to be the more legit out of the bunch! You shouldn't have ran this story before knowing all the facts, I thought you always do your research well prior to running any story. I guess I was wrong.

Posted by Carol at September 19, 2009 11:40 AM

Once again, Progressive is spinning the story in their favor. Your posts are misleading and incomplete. Where is the list of packaging charges that the girls incurred? $150 for a large crate, $125 for a medium crate and $75 for a small crate. By the way a "crate" is cardboard. How about the charges for rolls of tape and the "rental" of padding to put around the furniture. These are the additional charges that were not explained to the girls over the phone or the confirming e-mail which added up to $538.21. When I talked to "Sam" on the phone from Progressive, while they were holding the girls belongings hostage on the truck, he would not budge one bit on these riduculous charges. I also asked him about the "long carry" charge and the stair charge. I wanted to know why the girls were not told about these charges when they spoke to a Progressive representative on the phone. He said that the girls should have asked. How would anyone know what they charge extra for? Why don't you post that? As someone who was there the day of the move, I would like to mention a few things. The only things the movers "packed" were the two TV's. They cut up some cartons and wrapped tape around them. The girls had all their belongings packed and ready to go. No one ever came to their apartment to give an estimate. Everything was done over the phone. At zero hour when the movers arrived (4:30 pm) all these other forms were brought out to be signed. I would like Progressive to post the listing of their "packaging" costs. That is where they get you. The girls have a receipt for the total charges which were $1223.21 which was given to the Help me Howard office.
Total charge: 1223.21
Paid in Cash: (500.00)
(we have a signed receipt for the cash from Kenny from Progressive)
Two separate credit card charges:
Progressive (185.00)
ABC Packing (538.21)

Progressive you did not do the right thing here and it is time you admit it and stop playing the victim when you obviously took advantage of these girls.

Posted by Lola at September 22, 2009 1:46 PM

We got burned by Progressive and despite Mike and Eugene's comments regarding the validity of the charges tallied at the end of the day, there was no disclosure before, or during the actual move.

We were charged for padding the couches. We were charged for putting the TV in a box. There were no other packing done but the bill was over $100 of packing.

By the way, the owner of Progressive Movers, Inc., located in Paterson NJ is named Eugene. The attachments published by the Progressive representative are misleading because that is the tally at the END of the move, not the quote of the contract documents handed.

I have witnessed the travesty that is this business operation first hand. The quote issued was less than half of what was billed at the end of the day AND that takes into account their three hour minimum to move. The move was just under 2hrs.

I suggest that anyone else that experiences problems with this company file a complaint with the NJ Office of the Attorney General.

I have used five different moving companies in the past, long distance, local etc. But this was by far the worst moving experience I have endured. I have paid for packing in my last move but the gentlemen moving me detailed the charges before they touched an item of furniture. They moved me from a 2nd floor two bedroom apartment to a three story 4 bedroom house and put all the boxes in the assigned rooms. The bill was exactly as they said it would be during the quote and during our conversation at the onset of the actual move. And they did not charge me for padding my furniture or "long haul".

Posted by Anonymous at October 4, 2009 7:29 PM

Bottom line... Progressive Movers are a company that people should stay far away from. They are professional con-men who have also victimized myself not too long ago. They clearly charge you for materials that aren't even used like in my case, crates totaling over $1000. I plan on taking them to court in the very near future. It sucks that it takes experiences like this to bring this kind of criminal activity to the light. I think it should also be mentioned that if they are such the reputable company that they say they are, why aren't they a member of the Better Business Bureau? People, save yourself the headache & frustration of having your money stolen from you by these crooks. Don't believe the obvious fake posts by people saying that they don't work for that company. They could at least use different names when posting... I mean seriously!

Girls like any normal person now days, you should the following.

1. Do a research online, visit company website, read reviews from other websites.
(If there is nothing out there regarding the company, then it is very new and you should stay away).

2. READ THE CONTRACT.

3. If it sounds 2 good to be true then most likely it is.

You can't expect a Professional company, to send out 3 guys with a truck and all of that for $270 bucks.... where are your HEADS.

I had to rent a UHAUL truck myself and payed 3 teenagers for load and unload, $250 bucks each.
Thats $750 bucks and i had a one bedroom, it took them 2 days which ran me another $750 and for the truck i payed about $200.
So i spent $1700 bucks, i was happy and the kids.

What you payed sounds fair to me by all means, the Disel alone to drive that truck probly cost around $100 bucks.

Be happy that you payed that much, there are moving companies out there that could of charged you well over $2000.

just my 0.2

This company should be ASHAMED of themselves. They will take advantage of people at their most vulnerable time when they are about to move. First, this company does not disclose all the "extra" fees until they have arrived. Everybody will receive an initial quote of $70/hr for 3 men totaling $210 and probably mention that anything else is already included. Besides you explaining all the details regarding your situation such as which floor you're on, they will never tell you the extra costs even when you ask until the day of the move. Once the movers arrive, that's when they will try to tack on as much fees as possible and then ask you to sign the contract for the bill. There will be a staircase and long walk charge even if there's an elevator and the distance is only a few meters. If you dispute it, the movers will tell you to contact the office which is probably closed or no one is there to answer. Of course you need to move on that day so you have no other choice but to sign and hopefully settle the misunderstanding with the company afterwards. This is not how you do business. If there are fees, they should be explained and documented BEFORE the day of the move. This company is a FRAUD and AVOID AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE.
