Have you been trying to get an insurance claim settled...forever? Seriously, do you feel like you're getting the runaround? There's help out there for you.

How do you get your insurance company to settle a claim? How long does it take anyway? If you've been put out due to a fire, or if you've been in a bad accident or had serious health issues, chances are you're dealing with an insurance company. If it's taking forever to get your problem resolved, here's what you can do.

Go online. Type in www.ins.state.ny.us. That's the website for the State of New York State Insurance Department. They'll investigate.

First, you must file a complaint. Click on the online complaint form. Fill it out. Or call them at 1-800-342-3736. Or, you can go see them at their office at 25 Beaver Street in Lower Manhattan or 163 Mineola Blvd. in Mineola on Long Island. You'll get assigned to an examiner who will look into your claim immediately.

Mitchel Gennaoui from the New York State Insurance Department assures us, "People do not have to accept what an insurance company is telling them they are entitled to. If you feel that you're getting the runaround from an insurance company, we will take whatever steps are necessary to make sure that what you pay for under the policy is what you get."

Most insurance departments will help once a person gone through the appeals process with their insurance company. Consumers will be well advised to exhaust remedies from their own insurance carrier prior to contacting the department of insurance.
