Job Safety USA -- How Safe Are You?

Searching for a job these days is hard enough. But deciphering whether the position is real or fake can be even more of a battle. So I ask you -- could you spot a fake?

Sean Grandy and Harun Eberhart both were looking for jobs. Sean looking for a full-time position, Harun looking for some part-time work. They both were looking in a local newspaper classifieds when they came across an advertisement.

It read something like "STAR MAINTENANCE NOW HIRING -- No experience necessary, will train, $14 an hour, full benefits, 401k -- call 718-713-8638"

The ad caught their attention, so they responded. When each of them called the number, they couldn't reach a live person but were instead told to leave a message and would be contacted back. A couple days went by and in both cases, a man named Mark Johnson called each of them back.

This Mr. Johnson proceeded to tell them that he had maintenance jobs in the area. Sean asked where, but Mr. Johnson couldn't give any locations. Harun was told that they had some positions in Brooklyn, where he's staying. On a side note, Sean mentioned that there was a weird echo on the line and that the voice sounded computerized as if he was using voice disguising equipment.

But here's the catch. Mr. Johnson said the only requirement of the job was to get a CRN number. A Certificate Registration Number. Since neither men had a CRN, they were told to call 1-888-810-6048 to get it.

When they called the number they were directed to a "Jessica", who told them they had to pay $98.00 for their CRN. Desperate for a job, both gave out their credit and debit card information. They received their numbers and were told to go to the website www.jobsafetycenter.com.

There they had to put in their name and CRN#. There is a manual that you can print out. The information is pretty basic, but does not state where it is from. Also, there is a 10 question quiz that you have to take. After that you can print out your OWN certificate. Hmmmm. Sean printed out his and we took a look at it. There is a signature at the bottom with no named attached. Plus, there are no seals showing any type of compliance with state or national regulations.

We questioned the authenticity of this certificate. We called New York's Department of Labor, The State Department and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration -- all of them told us -- they have never heard of this business and confirmed there is no requirement of a certificate for a basic maintenance position.

Now depending on the job, there could be the requirement of a certificate. Most maintenance positions don't need one, but it's up to the employer to require it. Before you shell out your cash, ask what certification you need and who regulates their course or certificate program. If it is supposed to be an educational course, check it out with Department of Education and follow up with other government agencies such as Department of Labor, the State Department, Occupational Safety and Health Administration, The Department of Health and The Department of Environmental Protection.

Also, do a search on the Better Business Bureau or other consumer protection agencies. Try all the information you have. Companies might have multiple names, addresses and phone numbers. Plug all of them in. You'd be surprised what turns up.

Here are some extra tips when looking for a job.

* Do research on the company before you send your resume anywhere.
* Get the job offer in writing and follow up with the corporate offices. Get names, addresses and phone numbers.
* Do not spend money to get false certificates. Usually if you need to be certified, the employer will train you or offer training through them.
* Do not give out your credit card or bank information over the phone unless you are familiar with the company.

Thanks you Howard I really enjoy your show.

I noticed that the certificate shown has a HAZMAT stamp. This may be a serious problem. HAZMAT regulations are pretty strict after 9-11.
Homeland Security should be interested in fraudulent HAZMAT certificates.

Thanks again for your show.

EMPLOYEES FEAR FOR THEIR LIVES AT WOODHULL HOSPITAL..........
SINCE THE LAST LETTER WE HAVE BEEN THREATENED BY MANAGEMENT THAT IMMEDIATE TERMINATION WOULD OCCUR IF THEY FOUND OUT WHO TOLD ON THEM, RHEA MORRIS CAME TO WORK EARLY TODAY 03/25/2009,AND WENT ON A TIRADE, YELLING AT EVERYONE THAT WE BETTER WATCH OUT AND THEY ARE HURREDLY TRYING TO CLEAN UP BEFORE THEY ARE INVESTIGATED THEY CIRCULATED THE LETTER TO THE STAFF AND ARE TRYING TO GET PEOPLE TO TELL ON WHO THEY THINK WROTE IT.......MEANWHILE KENNETH RAMDAS CONTINUES TO REMOVE HIS TOUPEE AND SLEEP IN THE NURSING OFFICE AT NIGHT....LINDA MITCHELL ONCE REMOVED HER WIG AND DENTURES AND WAS FOUND SLEEPING IN THE NURSING OFFICE AT NIGHT BY AN ADN......CLAUDETTE BRANCH CONTINUES TO UNLEASH HER TERROR BY YELLING AT STAFF DENYING OUR VACATION REQUEST CANCELING OVERTIME AND THE ONLY REASON SHE HAS THAT JOB IS BECAUSE SHE HAD A BOTCHED SURGERY AT WOODHULL YEARS AGO AND STRUCK A DEAL OF PERMANENCY WHICH SHE PROUDLY TELLS YOU "NOBODY COULD GET RID OF ME, DEAL WITH IT I'M HERE TO STAY".....
like at our sister hospital kings county it took 4 hours on sunday august 24, 2008 to find a patient dead in his room, the third person in less then a year to die mysteriously on this one 8th floor detox unit only two workers were assigned to monitor all the patients which is a common practice. the one before him jumped out of a window into the parking lot. unlike the county we have many managers to successfully forge documents before the news people find out so that it would not appear to be as conspicuously bad as it truly is in this place
it is common practice to restrain patients without a doctors order and not report it to make the day a little easier. medication is given to sedate patients without doctors orders known as a "cocktail"
last year a patient went to psych and ended up in medicine with amputated toes because of neglect.
i worked at woodhull for a long time starting at cumberland in the early 1980's. things have only gotten worse. we have head nurses who got their position from sleeping with their bosses, even to the extent, that a child was borne out of the relationship, a child who is female and is now 16 years old and regularly visits the job during work hours. there are people with positions who are not qualified, most don't have proper degrees to support their titles, like lydie desrosiers who recently became a supervisor not only does she not have a bachelors degree in nursing she only received her position after having a sexual relationship with a former nursing director, michael goyea and having his daughter. a child who she often brings to the workplace and a supervisor who is not only unprofessional, she yells loudly and inappropriately to the point that she is commonly dismissed as being bipolar and crazy, doctors patient information, eats the patients food everyday at lunch time, often leaves the workplace to go shopping on graham ave, is proud of who she had fired or removed from there unit, collects money from employees for her personal "su-su" and uses her sister, vivian,a clerk who works at cumberland to go through the records of employees to find out their addresses and ages.at woodhull it is not what you know, but who you know and are willing to sleep with and victimize. there is no more professionalism here, administration is indiscriminate, they talk to staff in a hostile, belittling loud manner(if they talk to you at all), and handle crises inappropriately, not one is professional or in touch with what is going on the staff, this has been the worst management in all my years and many employees are fed up but are tied because of the years they invested and the benefits they are trying to secure with the city and no one is worse than rhea morris who is the deputy director of nursing after her good friend barbara lowe, the chief nurse who is known around here as a alcoholic, gave her the position even though when she was in charge of the emergency room she was hated by the staff and we wrote a letter to get her out of there then she went to be in charge of psychiatry even though she admitted to knowing nothing about that area. she yells at staff, insults them, threatens them discusses their personal business in front of others and does not represent the nursing profession in a professional way to a stranger she is just a ghetto woman with a job.

some people are allowed to do overtime, yet they do not put in the hours but the supervisors sign off for it and they get paid for it. even some head nurses do overtime and float regular staff so they could remain on the unit for their convenience, instead of them going where staff is needed. no one wants to stay in medicine. people who have worked here have admitted to feeling suicidal. one young nurse who graduated a few years ago as an rn left because of the oppressive conditions, and when she requested the transfer, nursing tried to prevent it, something that happens often, they do not want to treat the employees good but when you ask for a transfer to another department or hhc facility they block you from going. nurses are often made to float, they use that as a way to staff but many errors occur because there is no consitency.
positions are given to staff, not by qualifications, but by favoritism, many of them lack the educational credentials for those positions. in fact some people just received supervisory positions with only an rn diploma or associates degree, something that would never be accepted in a real hospital. often you are wopped for no logical reason except out of spite and vindictiveness. there are adn's who have set up nurses and had them terminated and sometimes suspended, in fact right now a worker from labor and delivery who was fired a few years ago, won a lawsuit against that same adn, Maxine Brown(she set her up with a false narcotic claim she forges documents and favors staff), and another worker is getting ready to file another suit against her for wrongful suspension and move out of the department even after being suspended they still moved her and changed her shift despite her plea to remain on that shift because of her small children at home but not surprisingly that is how nasty they are, you ask to go right they force you to go left and take pleasure in your pain. And when staff leave they don't give them a exit meeting as stated because they don't follow procedure and don't want there to be documentation of why people really leave if you were to follow up with staff who left just with in this past year or two you would be amazed at how many of them left because they were treated so bad, some were willing to work it out and stay but they were refused or never even allowed to meet with Barbara lowe to try and had no choice but to go and they were not given exit meetings to at least make HR aware of why there were so many people leaving. and even though so much of our staff leave instead of them using agency staff to help our work load they get rid of them to for personal reasons and call their agencies to dis credit them and stop them from working.
then there are clerks who act as administrators, not allowing messages to go through to the proper personnel. administration also does not respond to calls or letters or requests or complaints of any kind from staff. most of the older employees, like me stay because of the pension benefits, i have to make sure my future is set up right after all these years but truly gone are those days when administration cared what happened to its workers.
like with the nixmary brown case, it is not uncommon for staff to go into the records of other employees just because they want to know their ages or address or what is wrong with them medically but that doesn't make the news.
the doctors and their assistants are upset about the takeover by nyu and how they are being treated. the staffing is so bad that when an assignment is given your license is in jeopardy of being revoked because it is not possible to really carry out all of the duties or you are so tired from being forced to work overtime because there is no staff to releave you so documents are just forged by the head nurses with the support of our directors to make it look like they have things under control but really every day you pray and thank god that you did not get in trouble and not more people are hurt and not to mention the staff who have proudly set up their co workers to get them fired or suspended.
the only reason why there are not more complaints made about woodhull is because most of the clients are poor uneducated minorities with no insurance or family and many are illegal and do not know how, they may even believe that they deserve that type of treatment. and the patient satisfaction surveys are filled out by employees, especially when the patient can't read or write,, they just word the question in a way to get a positive response.

just a few months ago the director of hospital police richy galarza was arrested for being in an insurance scam which involved the stealing and chopping up of cars. yet he was the same corrupt cop who fired many hospital police for minor infractions and trumped up charges, depriving them of providing for their families while he raked in big money. administration knew and condoned a lot of his illegal practices which included preferential treatment, like having a hospital police guarding his door while hospitalized, just to keep his wife from entering the room while his girlfriend was visiting with him. a girlfriend who was an employee at woodhull and eventually had his child. it was also well known that he had extra cameras installed in his home to watch the employees, something that is illegal, he even set up a patient to say a hospital police hit them and got him fired because that officer stood up against some of the wrong that was going on, set ups here are not uncommon. while many times there are no supplies for the patients, not even basic soap, juice or towels but there medicaid and other insurance is being charged for service sometimes there is not even hot water to shower in. some one is abusing the money. they take so long to pay you overtime and vaguely put the dates on the check that when you get it you can't account for it when or if it does appear. i have seen many administrators leave here because of fraudulent actions, like missing funds. We don't have juice or food to give the patients but the executives have food prepared for them regularly from the kitchen staff.
when rhea morris had a death in her family last year, a woodhull van was used to take workers to and from the private funeral while they were on duty and collected their salary as if they were really working. the legos toy police officer are all lesbians seen kissing each other on camera and the men all have relationships with the staff here, like galarza and take there job to serious. in medicine, some nurses re use needles because they are nasty, they doesn't wash there hand, they leave patients on bed pans long and the techs doesnt listen to us like if there the boss. norris, stacy, angliaru are no help. staff get arrested on the job, like in icu. norris is not nice, for some reason stacy is self involved and angliaru doesnt no anything and eats all the time. benitez doesnt know much either they never have answers to your questions. it was much better when delores and cynthia was here!

Jobs are definitely hard to get these days and especially hard to keep. My prayers go out to anyone who has suffered a loss during these hard times. I currently am employed by Allied Barton Security Services. My work site is at 1 Centre Street. We recently had a budget cut at our site which sent many of our fellow guards packing. We are currently in the middle of a long battle with the company over a union beef. We want one.Thats the beef! We are subject to poor working conditions. We eat and change clothes in the same little 12ft. area. We do not have a break room.A break room has walls and a door, perhaps even a window. We have a table and a few chairs placed in a hallway. We do not have a microwave or a cooler which makes it almost impossible to bring food from home which would save us hundreds of dollars a year.We do not have sick days or paid medical leave. We do not get paid holidays which means on holidays when the building is closed and city employes are being paid we simply lose a days pay. If you are lucky enough to get a shift on a holiday such as Thanksgiving or Christmas you wont be paid the appropriate time and a half like most jobs. You simply didnt lose a days pay like the rest of your co-workers.We have chosen to have local union 32BJ represent us but management at Allied Barton are denying us our due.We can not even have paid vacations. There are people who have worked at 1Centre Street for over five years without ever getting an increase in pay. Please someone who reads this let us know what we and 32BJ can do to improve the working conditions at 1 Centre Street. All we want is what we deserve.Allied Barton Security Services does not care about its employees.

Howard, You do great work. I just want you to know that these people are still at it, still using the same phone numbers. Who do report them to and how do we do something about it?

I have a friend who is in desperate need of a job, and has been making calls, and sending resumes out by fax and online. And for the second time he has been contacted by someone who gave him this bull about the CNR number. They tempt with an offer that sounds too good to be true. They are still using the 888-810-6048 number. The call came from Wagner Borges 718-713-8661, called himself David SMITH (how original), gave a cell number 347-844-6109, a fax number 206-309-0846 and the 888 number above.

Luckily, the first time this happened, I was suspicious and I googled the number and your report came up. Thanks to your report my friend is not out any money, which he would have had to borrow from someone.

I am going to report this one to the FCC, Better Business Bureau, local politicians and anyone else you can recommend. Someone has to be able to do something about this. If we changed the laws and were able to have these people seriously fined maybe we could at least slow it down and maybe bring some money in to lessen the deficit.

In my eyes these people are the lowest life forms, preying on people in need, especially in these hard times. The roaches really crawl out of the woodwork in dark times. Thanks for you good work Howard, keep it up.
