Metrocard Mishap - Taken for a Ride?
Would you know what to do if your 30-day metrocard suddenly stopped working?
Paula Kent likes her commute on the # 7 train, to her job in Manhattan, from Sunnyside, Queens. She bought a 30-day Metro Pass for $80 but always worried what would happen if it got lost or stolen? Well, that didn't happen, but what did happen is it stopped working, after only a week into it. When it happened in the morning and again that night, Paula knew it wasn't her or just a problem with the turnstile. She went to the token booth clerk, who gave her a form to fill out.
AND the information that it required wasn't easy to get! She ended up having to send a friend to her subway stop in Queens to get the number off the machine where she's pretty sure she bought the metrocard. But what she didn't know was that it was already too late! The form had to be postmarked within 24-hours of the problem! An important fact the token booth clerk didn't think to mention. What should Paula and other subway riders do if this happens? Losing $80 would be painful for most commuters. We called the NYC Transit Authority and they assured us that if Paula fills out the form AND ATTACHES A LETTER explaining why she missed the deadline, they will take that into account and go ahead and process her a refund. She should get it back within a few days.
If you have a problem with a metrocard, make sure you get that complaint form from the token booth clerk, fill it out immediately and send it to New York City Transit, Attn: Metrocard Customer Claims, 130 Livingston Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201
