Bank Can't Find Safe Deposit Box

In most cases, safe deposit boxes are stored in concrete or steel vaults equipped with sophisticated alarms, locks, cameras, motion sensors, and other security devices.

But what happens if you get to bank and your box is gone? Howard tries to unlock the mystery of the missing safe deposit box.

Last May, Fouad Mozab purchased a safe deposit box at a Banco Popular in Brooklyn. The annual rent for the box was $110 bucks. Fouad tells us he was using the box to protect important immigration documents.

Later on in the year, Fouad went back to the bank to get the papers and other belongings out of the box. He was given a key but it didn't work. They said they must of given him the wrong key. They gave him another key but again it didn't work. According to Fouad, the bank manager even broke a couple of boxes but was still unsuccessful in finding his safe deposit box.

This past November, Fouad received a letter from the branch manager stating that they still cannot find it his box and that when they locate it they will contact him.

It is now February, and they still can't find his safety deposit box.

According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) , if there's a problem:

"Tell a bank manager if the vault attendant seems a bit lax in following security procedures or if you spot something suspicious going on. Immediately report to the manager any items you believe are missing from your box or if there are signs of unauthorized or forced entry. If you're pretty sure you've been victimized, it's also a good idea to contact the National Fraud Information Center (phone: 800-876-7060), which reports suspected crimes to law enforcement agencies. If your bank doesn't resolve the matter to your satisfaction, you may contact its federal regulator."

Hello Howard,
I really enjoy your broadcasts, you are great! We, my husband and I, only watch PIX11 and rely on Mr. G's weather report and love watching Jim & Kaity, you're all awesome, what a team!
As far as lasts nights report of Banco Popular, I'd like to comment on the way you were treated. I worked for a bank as a teller for years and I've never witnessed the kind of treatment you received. The Security Guard & the Manager and whoever the women was that put her hand up while you were asking a question, should all be given a day off to spend in an etiquette class! If my assets were vested in that bank, I would be withdrawing every penny today as a result of that segment. Their behavior was rude and disrespectful and I'm sure a lot of viewers will agree. If it were just one person that was leary about talking to you, ok, but everyone you tried to contact with, totally ignored you! What a way to ruin the banks reputation. I wish the best for Mr. Mosab.
Best Regards,
Carol
