Nothing Sweet About It...Daycare Ripped Off By Candy Fundraiser

It's one thing to rip someone off, but to rip children off, that's just horrible. A Brooklyn daycare used a company to hold a fundraiser in hopes of getting books for the kids. But when the company didn't hold up to their end of the bargain, the daycare called Help Me Howard.
Helen Blanchard is the owner of Little Ones Daycare located in Brooklyn, NY. Helen has been in business for 17 years and truly enjoys working with children.
A couple years back, Helen was contacted by a company called Kid's Literacy. The company presented her with a way to receive books through a candy fundraiser. Helen thought it was a great way to expand the daycare's library and asked to have the materials sent to her.
After receiving the brochures, the children sold candy, nuts, and other little trinkets. Helen collected the money and sent Kid's Literacy a check. Within a couple of weeks, the candy and other items came along with the books. Helen and the children were very pleased.
This past fall, Little Ones Daycare was again contacted by a Kid's Literacy and again agreed to do business with them. The children sold the candy and other items, then sent in their completed order forms and a check for $642.60.
The following week the Helen received a letter stating that Kid's Literacy got their order and that it would be shipped out later in the month. But the ship date came and went, and when they inquired they were sent another letter stating that their order was still being processed.
Helen figured since it was around Thanksgiving the holiday might have pushed back the shipment. However, another letter came and this time it was bad news. Kid's Literacy had no funds available and they would not be sending the candy, the books or even their money back.
That's when Help Me Howard got involved. We called our friends at Barnes and Noble and they were nice enough to donate some books to the daycare.
The website is still up and running, however, the phone number has been disconnected. Beware of this site: www.dedicatedtochildren.com.
Helen feels responsible for this situation and in turn is paying back the parents who lost their money. A noble gesture.
