NY Moves Magazine Competition
Yes, I can cook (well, with a little help!) It was a great afternoon at the James Beard Foundation in the West Village, where I was chosen to represent PIX 11 in a charity cook-off sponsored by Moves Magazine.
I was paired with chef Chris Siversen of Maritime Parc and we are competing against Julie Chang (Fox5) and Top Chef alum Ed Cotton of Plein Sud and Darlene Rodriguez (NBC) and Top Chef alum Dale Talde of Buddakan.
Thursday, March 10, 2011 the winner will be announced. Wish me luck!

Won't You Be My Friend?

I’m working on a story this morning that hits close to home, because I am guilty of doing it. Very Guilty. Accepting friend requests from total strangers. And, it wasn’t until I read a recent survey by Harris Interactive that I realized, just how bad it can be. But what’s even more interesting is that I seem to follow a more male pattern of friending than most!
In this new survey, 1 out of every 5 male social network users admits they will accept any friend requent that come from a woman — even if the woman is a total stranger they have never met before.
But, we women are apparently very different. Only 1 in 13 will accept requests from random male strangers.
The big problem, aside from seeing updates from a bunch of people you don’t know is that it can be dangerous and an easy way for a hacker to get into your personal life.
Let’s take a look at some of the things they could get access too:
1. They can scan your pages for any possible password hints
2. Without know it, we all have risky information our pages: place of birth, kids names, street names, etc.
3. They can start collecting data from friends of friends as well.
So, what do you do when you get a request from a stranger? It’s a question I have battled for sometime now, but didn’t realize the answer was simple. It’s okay to ignore it. That’s right online you don’t worry about being rude, because you must protect what you have right now. If you have already been friending strangers, take a few moments to monitor what you have out there, clean up and “risky information” and google yourself often to see what is really out there!
Stay safe fellow Facebookers.
