Won't You Be My Friend?

Screen%20shot%202011-03-23%20at%207.30.39%20AM.png

I’m working on a story this morning that hits close to home, because I am guilty of doing it. Very Guilty. Accepting friend requests from total strangers. And, it wasn’t until I read a recent survey by Harris Interactive that I realized, just how bad it can be. But what’s even more interesting is that I seem to follow a more male pattern of friending than most!
In this new survey, 1 out of every 5 male social network users admits they will accept any friend requent that come from a woman — even if the woman is a total stranger they have never met before.
But, we women are apparently very different. Only 1 in 13 will accept requests from random male strangers.
The big problem, aside from seeing updates from a bunch of people you don’t know is that it can be dangerous and an easy way for a hacker to get into your personal life.
Let’s take a look at some of the things they could get access too:
1. They can scan your pages for any possible password hints
2. Without know it, we all have risky information our pages: place of birth, kids names, street names, etc.
3. They can start collecting data from friends of friends as well.

So, what do you do when you get a request from a stranger? It’s a question I have battled for sometime now, but didn’t realize the answer was simple. It’s okay to ignore it. That’s right online you don’t worry about being rude, because you must protect what you have right now. If you have already been friending strangers, take a few moments to monitor what you have out there, clean up and “risky information” and google yourself often to see what is really out there!

Stay safe fellow Facebookers.

Beautiful Night In Newport !

IMG_3096-21-1.jpg

Here’s the article…love Newport! Thanks for having me!

NJ.com (Newport) Dozens of people visited with Santa, sipped on free hot chocolate, coffee and cider, and watched a unicycle-riding, juggler perform at Newport’s 9th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony tonight. WPIX Anchor Tamsen Fadal emceed the event and City Council President Peter Brennan light the tree.
Before pulling the switch, Brennan thanked Jamie LeFrak for turning an abandoned railroad terminal into a vibrant community. As the switch was pulled, fake snow poured over the tree, eliciting gasps of surprise and delight from the crowd.

Do's and Don'ts of Social Networking !

network1118.jpg

If you are wondering what to do with all your friends and fans and linked in connections, look no further.

Let's look at what you have: you've got a Facebook page, a Twitter account and maybe some other connection to the world of social media. It's nice to catch up with friends and family, but how can you use those pages to help you land a job or to help you network? Peter Shankman stopped by to talk about his upcoming book Customer Service: New Rules For A Social Media World and how to make the most of social networking. His tips included:

1. Networking doesn't begin when you get to the conference, it begins the second you leave your house.

2. Turns out, "It doesn't always have to be about you!" is actually a good comment.

3. Going up to the speaker at the end of her speech ensures only one thing: You'll be one of a hundred people going up to the speaker at the end of her speech.

4. Do something different

5. Be wary of making the leap from "Met you at the conference" to "Friending you on Facebook

Customer Service: New Rules For A Social Media World is available in stores now.

My Soul to Take was written and directed by Wes Craven. It is about a serial killer in Riverton, Massachusetts who says that he'll one day he will return to kill the 7 children born on the night of his death. Now sixteen years later, it looks like he may have been reincarnated as one of them.
